We only head back to the palace once the sun starts setting. We’re both slightly drunk and very hungry.

When we return to Lasta’s quarters, a dinner is waiting for us. Instead of sitting at the table, Lasta and I take some of the food with us to bed, where we eat sleepily.

“I actually think I want more than eight,” Lasta says. I am laying with my head on his chest, half-asleep.

“Hmm?” I murmur, trying to figure out what he is talking about.

“I want more than eight babies,” he says with a chuckle in his voice.

I laugh out loud and sit up. I lean down to kiss him.

“I don’t know how we’re going to manage that many kids. But at least the process of making them will be fun.”

“Definitely,” Lasta murmurs against my lips and reaches to cup my neck with his hand.

We fall asleep quickly, and I dream of Lasta and our imagined future together.

I dream of blonde naga babies, who have my eyes and Lasta’s smile.

I dream of a fairytale cottage, with beautiful flowers growing on the outside.

I dream of a life where Lasta comes home to me every day for the rest of our lives.

I dream of a life where I am happy.

I wake up when I feel Lasta move away from me. “Where are you going?” My voice is drowsy, and I rub my eyes to look up at him.

“I’ll be back now,” he tells me.

He does return quickly, and he hands me something.

“What is this?”

“I forgot to give it to you earlier,” he tells me. There is a smile in his voice, and I do not need to look at him to know that there is a smile on his face, too.

It is a little velvet box, and when I open it, I gasp at the thing inside.

“It’s gorgeous,” I whisper as tears well up in the corners of my eyes. It is a golden circlet that will fit perfectly around my arm.

“I wanted to get you something that you could wear to show that you’re mine now. My mate.”

“It’s lovely.” I breathe the words.

“You will wear it after the mating ceremony.” The order is clear. “And no other male will interfere with you. And if they try to, they will face my wrath.”

Lasta places the circlet around my right arm, and we start planning the mating ceremony.

To my surprise, Lasta is very interested in being involved in the planning process.

“You’ll get a lot of help from Aurora and Lorelai,” he tells me. “But it is our mating ceremony, so you have to get what you want. Don’t let them talk you into anything you aren’t comfortable with.”

And as we talk about the mating ceremony, my life unfolds in front of me. And for the first time, I am happy about what I see in the future.

LASTA

Ithink eight babies is a good number. But I'm willing to have more. Way more. And I want to release these eggs into Krista tonight.
