Chapter One

Myrtle Adams looked up from her laptop and felt something strange in her chest. She rubbed her sternum as she got up to walk to the kitchen. Her roommate, Nisha, was on the phone but stepped out of her way. Myrtle filled a glass with water and drank it, but then the pain bolted through her, and burning darkness pulsed through her soul.

Bright lights and beeping, as well as the sound of her ragged breathing, were everywhere when Myrtle woke up. Nisha, Tyren, Ava, and Moira were huddled in the corner, watching her as she started clawing at her tubing.

Ava darted out and came back with a doctor. Myrtle smiled through the stabbing pain in her body. “Figures you would come back with a doctor.”

Ava grinned.

The room wasn’t a regular emergency room. It was a luxury space with enough chairs for four visitors.

“Why am I in an omega suite?” She looked at the physician, who immediately went to examine her.

“Because all exams indicate you are an omega, Myrtle.”

“What is this pain?”

He paused. “You are in pain?”

“Agony, but I am learning to move with it.” She held up her hand, and it quivered dramatically.

The doctor helped her sit up, and as the bed moved silently, she wondered how bad things were. Her friends looked panicked.

“What’s wrong with me?”

“Would you like some privacy?”

Myrtle looked at her friends, and they grinned weakly. “Naw. I can’t keep a secret. What’s happened? I mean, I am twenty-nine and suddenly an omega? That isn’t normal.”

“We don’t understand it ourselves, but your body reacts to medication like an omega, your brainwaves are that of an omega, and there are extra slick glands in your body. You never noticed?”

“No. So, what is the issue?”

“Your body is in a destructive mode and will shut down in eight to ten weeks. You are reacting like a rejected mate.” He paused. “Have you been rejected by your linked alpha?”

“My what? No. I don’t have one of those. No marks on me. No links. Nothing.”

“Yes, that is what your friends said, and that is what is confusing us. There should have been some kind of known contact with an alpha. This only happens in rejected-mate scenarios, and we don’t see many of them.”

She cleared her throat. “Is there treatment?”

“You are losing personal energy at an astonishing rate. Your body won’t be able to support itself. But, being an omega, you have more psychic activity than an average beta, so instead of days, you have weeks.”

“So, you are saying that I am going to die.”

He nodded. “Yes. And we would like to see you daily to get your vitals.”

“Oh. Great. Sure. Well, I can possibly write that novel I always wanted. It can pay for my funeral.”

Her friends laughed, and then there was a whole lot of crying.

Myrtle looked at them. “Cry later. Did anyone think to bring me pants?”

Tyren lifted a bag. “Got them. When can we take her home?”

“We have a few more blood samples to take, and then you can go. I will be right back.”

She nodded and looked at her friends. “Well, this sucks. I have been rejected by an alpha I haven’t even met, and it’s killing me. I swear, if I ever meet him, I am going to pull his balls out through his nose.” Her breath hitched as a wave of pain went through her.
