Toros was looking at her, and there were tears in his eyes. “I am so very sorry.”

She nodded. “I know. You were a pawn. A tool. A feeble cog in the plan.” She waved a hand in the air. “A dead pigeon, a worm, a sacrificial goat. Like that.”

Teyval looked at their fifth and grinned. “She’s very good with words.”

Myrtle looked at Toros. “How fast do you heal?”

The guys looked at each other warily.

He shrugged. “About ten times the average. Why?”

“Stand up.”

Denith muttered, “Myrtle, you don’t need to do this.”

She looked at him and held her hand up. She left and walked to the big house to get Nisha.

When they returned to the carriage house, she looked at Nisha, “Please describe my worst nights.”

Nisha looked around and then nodded. “Right. It started with the heart attack, but they got you started again. Then over the following weeks, you got used to that pain, but no sedatives could ease it, and you asked me to kill you a few times. Well, you asked me to let you die. You yelled it, you whispered it, and you texted and emailed it a few times. I was afraid to fall asleep, so the others took turns watching you so you didn’t do anything to hurt yourself. Most of the time, you were just angry, but when it got the better of you, it was really bad.”

Myrtle smiled. “Thank you, Nisha. You can go back to your cookies.”

Nisha nodded. “I am super glad you are back.” Nisha hugged her, and Myrtle hugged her back.

“Thanks for sticking with me. I promise to beg Denith to cook for all of us one day.”

Denith smiled. “No problem. My pleasure, as long as the others can be there, and we are able to ask questions about Myrtle.”

“Oh, dude. For the right meal, we will show you baby pictures.”

Myrtle blinked. “What?”

“You were going to throw that album away, and I rescued it. You were adorable but really pouty.”

Myrtle looked at her friend and scowled.

Nisha grinned. “Yeah. Just like that.”

“Shoo, you tiny menace.”

“Hey, lay off the HGH and say that again.”

Myrtle turned her toward the door and swatted her butt. “Shoo. You really don’t want to see what’s about to happen.”

“Ow. What?”

“If we were bonded, my alphas would take care of discipline, but since we aren’t yet, I have to do it, and I am a woman of my word.” She sighed. “I will explain my options later. I am opting for something immediate.”

“You are not going to give it space in your brain.” Nisha nodded. “Got it.”

Nisha returned to the house, and Myrtle closed the door and looked at Toros. “Come here.”

Toros walked toward her. “Shall I kneel?”

“Nope. I need you standing for this.” She waited until he was standing right in front of her.

“Toros, you endangered the lives of everyone in this room. Denith and myself because you were pulling on us directly, and Byron and Teyval because they would have given everything to keep us alive. You believed a strange woman who identified herself as your mate. You bonded lives without the bond of the body that would have proved she was not what she said she was.”
