The scene made me frown.

I couldn’t help but remember the two Katar males and the human female.

Would she be safe here, amongst these rough beings?

The thought made me uneasy, but I reminded myself that it was not my concern.

With a final glance towards the parlour, I ascended the stairs.

The coolness of the wooden banister seeped through my fingers.

The hallway upstairs was dim, illuminated by a few lanterns hanging from the ceiling.

The faint smell of dust and old wood hung in the air, a scent that was oddly comforting.

As I entered my room, a wave of tiredness hit me.

I was ready to collapse into the soft bed, to succumb to the calling of sleep.

But as I washed my face, the image of the human female from the parlour wouldn’t leave my mind.

Her laughter, her radiant smile, and most importantly, the sight of her flanked by two burly Katars.

It was a strange feeling, a concern for a stranger.

As much as I was here to prove myself, I couldn’t help but feel that this inn, and the people in it, were becoming a part of a journey I never expected to embark on.

With a shaky breath, I managed to push the door shut behind me.

The sound echoed through the quiet room like a gunshot, sending a shiver down my spine.

My heart was beating out of my chest, each pulse echoing in my ears as I quickly initiated the locks on the door.

The locks.

I grimaced at the flimsy pieces of metal.

They wouldn’t do much against those determined to get through.

The realisation hit me like a punch in the gut.

In my panic, I had led them straight to my sanctuary.

I could have taken a different route, and lost them somewhere in the confusing layout of the inn, but hindsight was always clearer.

“Stupid, stupid, stupid!” I muttered under my breath, slamming my palm against the cold metal of the door.

The impact stung, but the physical pain was a welcome distraction from the fear that gripped me.

The room was a spartan affair, simple and functional.

The single window was a blurry panel of frosted glass that let in the faint glow of the moons outside, casting long, spooky shadows on the rough wooden floor.

My reflection stared back at me from the mirror on the wall, my usually bright eyes wide with fear and my skin pale under the moonlight.
