I gripped the reins tighter, the coarse fibers cutting into my gloves, a harsh reminder of the reality of the situation.

The monsters, whatever they were, were getting closer.

“Aznai,” I said, my throat raw. “What… What are those things?”

“Fog Specters, Lorik,” he said. “The deeper the fog is, the more real they become.”

“What happens when they get close enough?” I asked.

His look made the blood drain from my face.

I considered turning back, but I knew I couldn’t.

If it was possible, Aznai would have said so.

We needed to move to get us out of the fog and away from the shadowy monsters. My heart pounded against my ribs, adrenaline, and fear mixing in a heady rush that sent my senses spiraling.

My mouth was dry, fear lingering at the back of my throat.

Swallowing down my apprehension, I leaned forward and nudged my mount into action.

I could feel the powerful muscles of the Hiika coiling beneath me, ready to spring forward at my command.

The low hum of its nervous energy vibrated against my thighs, a comforting sensation that helped steady my nerves.

With a swift kick, I urged it forward.

The beast let out a low, guttural sound, a defiant challenge to the fog and its spectral occupants.

The noise echoed around us, bouncing off the invisible walls of the fog and filling the air with an ominous resonance.

We should have been at Ruara’s house by now.

Unless it had moved.

Orwehad moved.

We broke into a gallop, the Hiika’s hooves crunching against the coarse desert sand, each step a testament to our shared will to survive.

The wind whipped past us, howling through the empty landscape and carrying away the guttural cries of the monsters.

I didn’t look back.

I couldn’t.

Every nerve, every instinct screamed at me to keep going, to put as much distance between us and the nightmarish apparitions as possible.

As we raced across the desert, the monstrous shadows fading into the impenetrable fog behind us, my heart pounded in my chest, the adrenaline still singing in my veins.

A sense of relief washed over me.

This was Enchor’s Heart, a place of unknown dangers.

The fog still hung heavy around us, and the monstrous figures may have been lurking just out of sight, but I was not alone.

I had Aznai, I had my Hiika, my trusty alien steed.

I could have been a lot worse off.
