Aznai was gone…

The figure who had saved my life countless times had finally committed his last act.

Grrroaarr!

But the monsters were still on us.

I would have to grieve for my friend later.

The fog was a disorienting veil, but the weight of Madison’s hand in mine was grounding.

The cold, damp air stung my nostrils, each breath reminding me of the danger we were in.

We had to find our way out.

Just when I believed our path might be clearer, a silhouette emerged from the mist.

It was Onshev.

His eyes, already cold and calculating, seemed even more sinister in the glow of the fog.

Without a second’s delay, he lunged at me, fists first.

I was ready, deflecting the initial blow, sending him slightly off balance.

The fog made it difficult to anticipate his next move, but years of training had honed my reflexes.

With every punch, kick, and dodge, I could smell the acrid odor of sweat.

I landed a solid punch on his jaw, the sensation jarring up my arm.

Another swift kick had him down on the ground.

As I loomed over him, blade ready to deliver the final biting blow, a fleeting memory of my own father’s teachings came to me.

About mercy, even in the direst of situations.

Perhaps there was still some good left in Onshev, some humanity that might be appealed to.

We needed every blade we could get in this fog, and I wasn’t ready to give it up just to satisfy my own vengeance.

I extended my hand to him.

He looked at it uncertainly as if I had offered him a viper in place of help.

For a moment, he just lay there, gasping for breath, his face a mix of pain and surprise.

I heard the slight wheeze in his breath and realized maybe, just maybe, he would take this opportunity and change.

Madison squeezed my hand, a silent gesture of approval.

But our hopes were dashed when he suddenly sprang up, a hidden blade gleaming ominously as he thrust it towards me.

I dodged, but not quite fast enough, feeling the cold steel slice the scales of my arm.

Warm blood trickled down, its coppery scent rising immediately.

“Did you think I’d just let you go?” Onshev sneered, his voice dripping with malice. “After everything?”
