Then his body fell forward onto the floor.

My dragon fluttered up into the ceiling, winking out of existence.

Layla stood transfixed, frozen.

With the criminal no longer holding her hostage, she seemed unable to bear her own weight.

I rushed toward her, catching her before she struck the floor.

“You… You did it!” she said breathlessly. “You… You actually did it!”

“Only thanks to you.”

She beamed with joy and tears streamed down her face.

Her beautiful,gorgeousface.

I smothered it with tears, unable to hold back.

She wrapped her arms around my head and held on tight as I lifted her in my arms.

Then I kissed her some more.

She was just as passionate with her response.

I felt like a chapter had been closed and a new one opened.

I was no longer alone and I had someone to spend the rest of my life with.

And not just anyone, but my fated mate.

Three figures appeared in the doorway, cast in silhouette by the bright light outside.

“Hmph,” Klem grunted at seeing our kiss. “I suppose all Layla’s flirting earlier meant nothing then?”

Layla and I threw back our heads, roaring so loud with laughter that anyone might have thought the ancient monsters standing around us had come back to life.

Klem joined in too, laughing harder than any of us.

As their gales of laughter rolled over us, I leaned in close and whispered in Layla’s ear:

“I love you, Layla. With all my heart and soul.”

“I love you too,Governor. But you’re going to have to fight for the love of my heart and soul.”

I grinned at her. “Gladly. With every day of my life.”

And I did.
