He shut his eyes and tried to block whatever image formed in the front of his mind.

I had tried to make things better and now I had only succeeded in making themworse!

Losing Sleii had been painful but it was always understood between us that ours was a business relationship, nothing more.

Although I lost him, I could easily find another.

But a soulmate… a fated mate no less…

That wasanotherthing entirely.

“At least you had each other for all those years you were together,” I said helpfully.

“Yes. Yes, I suppose we did.”

His solemn mood brightened slightly and he kissed me on the forehead. “All things happen for a reason,” he said. “So maybe that reason is you.”

I froze, feeling the tendrils of his electrified kiss shimmer through me until it faded to obscurity.

It was always dangerous to get too close to a client, too dangerous to open your heart.

It was important toalwaysbe a professional, to always manage expectations.

And I hadnoexpectations of this relationship.

What we had now was all there wouldeverbe.

“What time is it?” the Governor asked.

I glanced over at the clock on the wall and told him.

The Governor nodded. “I had better get back to the palace before my servants start making up rumors. Before long, the entire population of Enchor’s Heart will be whispering them. No matter whether they’re true or not.”

He pulled on his underwear, then his pants.

Imuchpreferred the traditional Chi garb but even modern alien businesses couldn’t seem to escape the traditional suit and tie.

He pulled on his shirt and buttoned it up.

I sat up, pressing the sheet to my chest. “I’m going to stay a little longer if that’s okay?”

He nodded. “Of course. Feel free to order whatever you want from room service. Breakfast is included too if you’re still around then.”

I beamed. “A mini-holiday from my mini-holiday.”

He chuckled, crossed the room, and planted a kiss on my cheek.

It was good he had already given me the money as it would have felt strange for him to hand it to me now.

That was the part I never much enjoyed.

It always made me feel dirty somehow.

He raised my chin with a finger and kissed me on the lips. “I want to see you again. I’ll get in contact I’m free.”

With that, he turned, scooped up his coat and hat, and stepped in the doorway.

He smiled back at me before nodding and leaving.
