I opened my mouth to scream, kicking myself for not having thought of it sooner.
A large hand pressed over my mouth, muffling the scream on my lips.
The door shut and the lock initiated with a softclick.
The larger Chi shoved himself up from the floor and wiped an arm across his mouth.
A chunk of carrot — why was it always a carrot? — tumbled from the corner of his lips.
He scooped up my unfinished Coke and filled his mouth with it.
He swished it around his mouth to wash it out but immediately retched again.
“Will you quit puking everywhere?” the little leader snapped, pinching his nose between his thumb and forefinger and withdrawing a tissue from his pocket. “Some of us have to breathe it in!”
“Sorry boss,” the large henchman said between heaves.
“Where do you want this one?” the sharp-eyed one holding me said.
“Where she is is fine. If we put her down, she will only try to escape again.” He drew up to me, the tissue placed over his mouth. “Won’t you, my dear?”
I was terrified, my eyes bulging and wide.
I didn’t have it in me to deny him.
Of course I would try to escape!
“Then just listen to what I have to say,” he said. “You ought to listen closely as I’m not in the habit of repeating myself. You see, we noticed a certain figure who met you in this hotel room earlier, the Governor of Enchor’s Heart.”
My heart leapt into my throat.
They had been watching us?
But how could they know?
Had they spied on us?
Were there cameras?
No, I thought. They couldn’t have known we would be here.
The Governor hadn’t pre-arranged our meeting and it had happened in haste.
He hadn’t planned it beforehand.
He had simply acted on impulse.
“Now I have your attention, don’t I?” the little leader said. “But if you think this is all about the Governor, I am afraid you are mistaken. You see, we have been following you for quite some time. You are the one we have chosen to carry out our mission.”
Mission?
What was he talking about?
I didn’t know anything!
I had no secret information!
I was never in the military!
