That was the first time I had seen the look of pure pleasure on her face… outside the bedroom.

I tried the ice cream. “Oh!”

It was easily the best of all the dishes we’d enjoyed tonight.

By far.

The sweetness made my tongue tingle.

I looked over at Layla and a smile came to my lips at just how happy a simple bowl of sugary food made her.

Already my sadness was dissipating — which shocked me as it usually took me hours or days to get over.

With Layla by my side, I felt as if a page had finally been turned, revealing the first of a series of new chapters.

I reached over and placed my hand on hers as she hungrily gobbled up her ice cream.

I’d rarely been so open and forthcoming with someone.

Although Layla was not a born explorer the same way my ex-wife had been, she was still adventurous in her own way.

And that is just as exciting.

As I continued to scoop up my ice cream, I realized I was falling for her, heart and soul, into a bottomless pit of love.

And that shocked me more than anything.

The palace felt like a completely different place without Sleii to chaperone me.

For once,Iwas the center of attention.

Iwas the purpose of the event.

AndIwas the focus of the Governor’s interest.

I had been to the palace on countless occasions, always as a plus one.

Now, I was there in my own right.

Never before had I paid much attention to the artwork on the walls, the priceless historical artefacts dotted about on the shelves.

It produced a much deeper level of interest and made me feel more at home on this planet than I had before.

I enjoyed being in the Governor’s presence and found it difficult to believe I had fully intended on never seeing him again.

All because of that electrical charge between us.

I felt it now, every time he placed his hand on my back, exposed through the open back of my dress.

I felt the jolt of his glowing golden eyes when they locked onto mine.

They were powerful, dominating eyes and made me feel that no matter what happened, I was always going to be okay.

Each time I lost my focus, I found myself drifting back to the hotel room after the Governor had left, forced to face the little leader with his contingent of henchmen.
