But in my profession, sometimes it paid to do things you did not wish.

I’d had to make love to clients before simply because I had no other choice — those I would have crossed the street to avoid in ordinary circumstances.

I would have done the same with the little leader if it meant I didn’t have to go through with this plan, if it meant I could protect my sister and her children by doing so.

But it was no good.

I knew even if I did sleep with him, he would force me to complete his “mission.”

He might even promise me I wouldn’t have to go through with it… until he’d filled me with his seed.

I stepped backward and his finger slipped free.

I folded my arms. “That’s a question you’re going to have to answer with another Elinz'ang.”

His eyes glowed fiercely and I thought for a moment he was going to fly out and hit me.

But he got a handle on his temper and must have realized that by harming me, it would render me unable to bring him this Blue Orb he coveted so highly.

He smiled but it was full of venom. “Very well. I will experiment once I have sold the Orb to the highest bidder.”

He marched toward me before changing direction at the last moment.

He paused a moment, looked at me over his shoulder, sniffed, and continued toward my front door.

“Oh, by the way,” he said. “Just in case you need a little reminder…”

He took something from his pocket, pinned it to the door, and left.

I breathed a deep sigh of relief and leaned against the door frame.

Would this dayneverend? I wondered.

I needed to get ready and look the part for the palace, to wine and dine the Governor.

As I turned to head toward the bathroom, light glinted off the thing he had pinned to the door.

I didn’t want to see what it was as I knew it couldn’t be anything good.

But my curiosity got the better of me.

I glanced up at it and my blood froze in my veins.

It was a photo.

Of two children playing, smiles adorning their faces.

It was a summer’s day and I could have recognized the kids anyway.

They were my nieces.

They were so close…

These scumbags were so close to my family…

I needed to succeed.

Ihadto succeed.
