I blinked awake, back to the present moment in the palace.

The Governor was telling me about some of the rarer items on the shelves when I suddenly interrupted—

“Where do you keep the rarest items?”

As he gave me a tour of the palace and its various historic items before dinner, I had not once laid eyes on the Blue Orb.

Was it really here? I wondered. Did it even really exist?

Had it been removed at some point?

Then my heart stopped when I recalled the evening just a week ago when two items had been smashed, broken by one of the servants.

Please tell me one of those wasn’t the Orb…

“The rarest items?” the Governor asked, losing his train of thought.

“Yes,” I said, “where are thereallyvaluable things?”

“Well, I suppose they’reallvaluable.”

I nodded. “But where are themostvaluable ones kept? Is there something here that’s more valuable than all the other items?”

He thought for a moment. “The palace itself, I suppose. It’s the most valuable thing here. And the thing with the most history. If we had a historian here, we could probably listen to him for hours going on about it.”

I smiled distractedly. “But there must beotherthings you have here?” I insisted. “Things most people don’t get to see?”

He paused a moment, looking at me thoughtfully.

I was coming across as too keen, I realized.

I needed to allay his suspicions. “I’ve… been here many times,” I told him, “but I’ve never learned about their history. It would be nice to see everything all in one go. Even if we would need a historian for all the really intricate details.”

Slowly, his suspicion melted. “Of course. Every time you come, it’s always for an event, isn’t it? You never had a proper tour before. Although I can’t give it to you as I lack the necessary knowledge, perhaps I can help you to see some of the rarer items. Come. Follow me.”

He took me through the other adjacent rooms.

I moved quickly, faster than he could tell me about each item.

I scanned each one but still I could not identify anything that could be described as an Orb.

I began to panic.

Is it even here?

If I told the little leader I hadn’t seen it, that it wasn’t here, there was no doubt in my mind he would not believe me.

Why should he?

After all, I would doanythingto get out of having to steal the thing.

Finally, we came to the end.

The Governor had shown me all the artefacts, all the paintings, all the drawings…

Istill hadn'tfound it.

How could I steal something when I couldn’t evenfindit?
