“It means whatever you wish it to mean, which means it can mean anything… or nothing.”

As the flame died, the rabbit winked out of existence along with it.

Then he switched the lights back on and the Orb became its regular shape once more.

The Governor placed it back on the table. “So you see, some things have beauty deep within them. Sometimes it takes the right trigger for it to be brought to the surface.”

He cupped my hands in his. “And some things have their beauty fully on displayon the outside. But they haveeven greaterbeauty on the inside.”

He looked at me meaningfully and kissed my fingertips.

I had never known the Governor to be so poetic or romantic.

It seemed not only the Orb had hidden depths…

“Come,” he said. “Let us look upon the moon and stars before we turn in for the night.”

I nodded as he led me away.

I glanced over my shoulder in the direction of the shelf.

In the direction of the Blue Orb.

The item I had been looking for hadn’t been among the palace’s historical artefacts the way I had expected but was one of the Governor’s many travel souvenirs.

I had found the Blue Orb the little leader wanted.

Now, I felt a deep writhing sensation in the pit of my gut as I realized what the next step demanded of me:

To betray the Governor’s trust and swipe it from beneath him.

It was one of the Governor’s most personal items, one that reminded him of his time with his dead wife.

Could I take it from him?

And what price would I pay if I did?

The night skywas as beautiful as I had ever seen it.

The stars glinted brightly, the distant Gjora Nebula shone even brighter than the stars themselves.

I held onto the railing that fed onto the broad lawn beyond.

I couldn’t stop thinking about the Blue Orb and what I was going to have to do to get it.

In my mind, I pictured the Governor’s bedroom and the route I would have to take.

It wasn’t difficult, but I would have to avoid the servants on my way.

I would just have to be careful, I thought.

Also, gettingoutof the palace ought to be a lot easier than gettingin.

If I left in the middle of the night, I was sure the Governor would understand.

He might not even notice he was missing one of his souvenirs… for a while at least.

Still, it left a bitter taste in my mouth.
