He had been nothing but kind to me, honest and sweet.

And here I was, standing on his balcony, preparing to betray him.

I needed to remind myself what I was doing this for.

My family.

My sister, my little nieces.

They needed me to be strong.

So I would be.

I looked down the broad lawn and recognized a tall Ureb tree in the far corner.

I couldn’t help but smile at the recollection of it.

Just a week ago, I had been standing here with Sleii, looking out and seeing Mila and Krena beat a hasty retreat as they crossed the lawn and hid behind that tree.

It was obvious to anyone as to what they intended on doing.

I had known then what their intentions were, that Mila had never intended on marrying the Governor at all.

I only just learned she was betrothed to the Governor and it had never been her decision to marry him.

He did not deserve to be treated that way.

Of course, Mila didn’t deserve to be forced into a marriage she did not want either.

So, I supposed they werebothfortunate she managed to escape with Krena.

“What are you thinking about?” the Governor asked, his arm wrapped around my waist, his mouth so close to my cheek I could feel the warmth of his breath on my cheek.

“About love,” I said.

The Governor nodded. “Of all my adventures, that is perhaps the most difficult one of all.”

Sadness came over him and I felt sorry for him.

He may not have loved Mila but he had at least been open to exploring it.

That made him braver than most.

Most settled into a comfortable relationship and never deviated from it.

They remained trapped in comfort, which was exactly where they wished to be.

I felt a question burn on my lips and I couldn’t hold it back any longer. “What happened to your wife?” I said softly.

The Governor looked into the deep darkness of the night, seeing a scene only he could see.

I wondered what was playing before his eyes.

Not expecting him to explain, I was surprised when he finally did:

“My ex-wife’s face right before she died. Right before she was murdered.”

My heart stopped.
