Murdered?

I never knew that.

If I had, I never would’ve asked.

I shook my head at myself, angry I had been so stupid.

“We were exploring the ocean planet of Keeop’s Salvage when pirates captured us and took us hostage. I attempted an escape using my training and managed to commandeer one of their escape pods. We got some distance away but they quickly caught up to us. After that, they were… less forgiving. Their captain held my wife at gunpoint. I was angry and thought I could overpower them. I fought with them and managed to grab one of their blaster pistols. I aimed it at the pirate captain and fired.

“I missed. The bolt seared his cheek, cauterizing it in the same instant. He grinned at me and pulled his own trigger. Time seems to slow in those moments. I saw my wife’s face and the terror in her eyes. She was looking at me, thinking I was going to rescue her, was going to rescuebothof us. Instead, I failed and doomed her to death.

“I roared and they fell upon me, pummeling me with blows until they knocked me out. They didn’t kill me as I wished they would and instead dumped me on a spit of a moon. It was a month before someone found me, and when they did, I was little more than skin and bone. Every day Isaw my wife’s face and the look in her eye when I missed my shot. The shot that killed her was my own.”

The story was shocking.

I couldn’t imagine going through such a thing.

Although, with the little leader’s threats, I thought I just might before too long.

If I failed to get this Blue Orb, I would suffer the same fate.

“I’m so sorry,” I said, reaching out and stroking his cheek.

He shut his eyes and, if I wasn’t there to witness it, he might have actually cried tears.

“It’s the past,” he said without much enthusiasm. “What is done is done. There’s nothing we can do to change it. From that day, I gave up traveling, gave up adventure. I just didn’t have the heart for it anymore. I gradually built my life again, got into politics, and discovered I had a talent for it. I channeled all my passion for adventure into my new endeavor: Helping others. Saving them from having to lose a loved one the same way that I had.”

I placed my hand on his.

After a moment, he looked at me.

“There’s no reason for you to give up on adventures,” I said. “After all, what if your shot had been one inch theotherway? If you had struck the pirate captain, she might have gone free. And you both might have escaped. It was bad luck you missed.”

He shook his head. “It was poor skill.”

I placed my hands on his cheeks again and looked him dead in the eye. “It wasbad luck.”

He blinked, seeming to take some comfort in my words.

I took him by the hand and led him inside and up the stairs.

There, we made love for the third time in twenty-four hours.

It was slower this time, lacking our usual frantic pace.

I watched him, his eyes on mine as he filled me with his seed, my own body ejaculating at the same time.

A bond had formed between us.

A bond I had never expected.

A bond I was about to break.

I lay awake, fearful if I allowed myself to drift to sleep I wouldn’t wake up again until morning light.

I leaned over and listened to the Governor’s deep breathing and knew he was fast asleep.

I shifted the blankets to one side, watching him closely.
