I didn’t stop to see if Layla was following.

I didn’t need to — with the Blue Orb in my pocket, there was no way shecouldn’tfollow.

I approached a servant standing before the main entrance doors. “Bring my shuttle around, please,” I said.

The servant leapt into action, whispering into his communication device.

“Hold up!” Layla said, panting as she drew up beside me. “Where are we going now?”

“You want to keep your sister safe, don’t you?” I asked.

She braced her hands on her hips. “Yeah.”

“So, come with me.”

The shuttle pulled up and the pilot stepped aside so I could get in behind the controls.

No sooner had a servant shut Layla’s door than I ascended and banked hard, taking us over Irctaw.

The sun still hadn’t risen yet but the light was beginning to shimmer over the horizon.

It wouldn’t be long before it had bathed the whole moon in fiery red light.

“Are you going to tell me where we’re headed or not?” Layla snarled.

“Not,” I decided, grinning over at her.

It wasn’t a smile that contained much real mirth in it — what was there to feel mirthful about, exactly?

But it reflected how I felt… or at least how IwishedI felt.

Cold, distant… a million miles away from here and the situation I suddenly found myself in.

We flew in silence and by the time we reached our final destination, the sun had begun to grip the moon with its bright tendrils.

I had chosen the same field I had escaped to just a few days ago.

It was quiet, out of the way, an ideal meet-up spot.

I bent down and jabbed at the shuttle’s controls.

Within a few seconds, a red light blinked on the control panel.

“What’s that?” Layla asked.

“That is called a beacon.”

“A beacon?” Layla said. “A beacon for what?”

“For us.”

“For us?”

She looked from the flashing red light to me and back again. “What do we need a beacon for?”

“For someone to find us.”

“Who?”
