I kissed his fingers, gave him one last hug, and then turned and walked down the street.

I didn’t look back.

The last thing I needed was for him to see the tears in my eyes and the doubt that was so thick I almost choked on it.

And I was grateful he hadn’t felt my heart either.

If he had, he would have known the fear I was feeling… and the uncertainty as to just how the next few hours were going to play out.

I wasnervous as hell as I approached the city offices.

Just yesterday, I had come here with a basketful of sandwiches and other snacks to sell to the Governor’s workers just so I could get close to him and whisper a message in his ear.

Now look at me!

I stood on the corner of the street, my arms clenched around my elbows, with no plan or idea of what was going to happen next.

Why do these things always have to happen to me?I wondered.

A tall Chi wearing a sharp suit glanced up at me as he crossed the road toward me.

I smiled at him, expecting him to stop and tell me something, do something…

And instead, he just lowered his eyes and continued on into the city offices.

He obviouslywasn’ta contact.

I looked further up the street and saw a big shuttle parked at the curb.

My throat felt dry and I wondered if it was going to pull up alongside me and—

It began to move, drifting forward.

I wanted to check over my shoulder, to see if I could make out the Governor somehow.

Just seeing him nearby would have given me the dose ofcourage I needed to deal with whatever was going to happen next.

But the shuttle turned right and disappeared down another side alley.

I let out a breath.

I don’t know why I did that.

It wasn’t like that was any better or worse than what the little leader’s real plan was.

Or maybe he had given up, I thought with more than a little hope.

Maybe he decided the Blue Orb wasn’t worth all this and he would go find a nice spread to raise sheep… or whatever passed for sheep on this side of the galaxy.

The idea of the little leader being a shepherd almost made me laugh.

He seemed built for crime and couldn’t exist somewhere like a farm any more than I could.

No, he had found his niche, and being a creepy ne'er do well suited him to the ground.

And that was where I would end up if I didn’t keep my head about me:

In the ground.
