Then I had an idea…

“Klem,” I said. “What materials can block an emergency beacon signal?”

Klem pressed his hands to his hips — hissignificantly widerhips — and let out a deep breath. “With a regular signal? Any material dense enough… but anemergencysignal? That would require something pretty unusual. The only thing I can think of is tiberium. That could block it, sure as day.”

Tiberium…

The same material the Orb was made of…

Did that somehow figure into any of this? I wondered. Or was it just one of those coincidences of Fate?

I didn’t know and it wasn’t going to get answered with my limited knowledge of Enchor’s Heart’s history.

I needed an expert, someone who knew everything about Enchor’s Heart and its entire history.

My eyes lit up.

Someone in the process of writing a book about that very project right now…

I grabbed my communicator and jabbed in Sleii’s contact details.

As the call was made to his office, I growled at Joruch:

“Take us in as close to Layla’s last known location as you can.”

“But that will mean violating at least two dozen laws—”

“I am the damn law!” I snapped. “I’m the governor!”

“You’re the boss,” Joruch said, and he turned our ship into oncoming traffic, which hastily swerved to avoid us.

The violations flashed up on the screen and Joruch quickly batted them away.

At least two dozen laws? Try a fewhundred!

Abusing the laws this way was bound to turn around and bite me in the ass one day but I didn’t care.

Layla needed me.

I had put her in harm’s way and I wasnotgoing to make her pay for my mistakes.

“Hello? The Governor? Are you there?”

It was Sleii.

He’d already answered my call and I hadn’t heard him.

“Sleii?” I said. “Can you hear me?”

“Loud and clear,” he said. “What’s that noise? Are you on a ship?”

“I don’t have time to explain now!” I yelled over the whining engine and the honking shuttlecraft outside as they barely managed to pull out of the way in time. “I need to ask you about tiberium.”

“What do you want to know?”

“I want to know where it can be found in massive amounts on Enchor’s Heart. I want to know natural locations and Chi-made ones.”

“Natural locations?” Sleii said, and I could already picture him running a hand over his chin in that thoughtfulpose he often assumed when considering the history of Enchor’s Heart. “Well, that would be the mines.”
