“What is it?” I said.

“We’re at Layla’s last known location,” Azzak said. “We’ve come to a door in the wall. We’ve tried opening it but it’s no use. A worker said he saw two figures enter it earlier. It caught his attention because he’s never seenanyonemanage to open it before.”

“Keep hold of the worker,” I told Azzak. “And hold on a sec.”

I unmuted Sleii. “We found a door where Layla disappeared through. We don’t know where it leads.”

“Where is it?” Sleii asked.

“In the metro.”

“Which platform?”

I growled, angry at myself for not asking that earlier. “Hold on.”

I turned to Azzak but he must have heard my conversation with Sleii as he said:

“Four. Platform four.”

“I heard it,” Sleii said. “Those doors were once the entrance to the old mines. There was one right here in this city. It’s actually why the city was built here in the first place. But it wasn’t large, so it didn’t take long before they removed all the tiberium they found.”

“So where does this door lead?” I asked.

“West,” Sleii said. “On the western side of the city.”

I turned to Joruch. “Head west!”

Joruch swung the controls around, taking us up and over the metro building and soaring westward.

“We’ve got company,” Klem said.

By now, our flagrant disregard for the rules of the air had gotten the Enforcers’ attention and they pursued us.

I let out a loud growl that I didn’t even attempt to conceal.

“I can hear what you’re going through,” Sleii said. “While you deal with the Enforcers, I’ll research where specifically that door leads.”

Good old Sleii.

Always good in a pinch!

I patched into the city office and was relieved to find some of the workers had already arrived.

I informed them to make the Enforcers currently chasing an unlicensed shuttle — I couldn’t help but shoot a glare at Joruch, whose ship this was — stop their pursuit and clear a path for it heading west.

When the Enforcers refused to stand down, I asked to be patched through to their commander.

I informed him I was on averyimportant mission and if he got in the way of it, I assured him he would not be commander for very much longer.

He saluted and called off the pursuit.

I let out a deep breath as we careened across the city, now with an Enforcer guard.

Things were slowly turning in our favor but if we didn’t reach Layla in time and if something terrible happened to her before we could reach her…

It would all be for nothing.

“Governor? Are you there?”
