Then there was a whine and a deep voice growling.

And then, the worst sound of all:

A female screamed, interspersed with the frantic tearing of clothing.

No…

It was her, I realized.

Layla.

I could recognize her screams anywhere, although I had never heard them sound so pitiful before.

I stormed toward the black curtain and swung my blade up high across it.

If Layla was on the other side of it, I didn’t want to risk slicing into her.

A thick wound opened up on the tarpaulin’s surface.

There was another room in there!

Ahiddenroom at the back!

Someone might have seen me cut through the tarpaulin but Layla’s screams were so shrill, I couldn’t just stand back and wait or try to sneak in another way, so I threw myself forward into that gaping hole.

It tore beneath my weight as I landed and rolled.

I came up into a standing position and found myself facing the most horrific scene I could imagine:

Layla lay on the floor, one of the disgusting vile creatures on top of her, his grin wide and pointed, his blade winking with the light of my flashlight.

And two goons stood watching, so totally consumed with the event that they hadn’t even seen me tear my way inside…

Until now.

There was another figure, a small Chi that I thought I had seen before.

He sat huddled over himself, clutching his arms and something — the Blue Orb! — to his chest.

He didn’t look dangerous and I ignored him.

It was the others I would focus on.

I rose and opened fire, my first blast taking the smaller goon in the chest.

I had originally set my blaster to stun but now, withwhat they had planned on doing to Layla — and yes, it was just a plan, as they had not yet gotten her naked for their disgusting act — I spun the power dial up to full.

The second plasma bolt slammed into the creature’s chest and, stunned, he dropped his own pistol.

He peered down at the hole in his chest as if it were a foreign object.

Through it, I could see the black tarpaulin on the other side as it rippled and writhed like a living monster.

He was already dead. His mind just hadn’t cottoned on yet.

His buddy, who was slower to react, which was what had saved him from receiving my first two bolts, raised his blaster at me and opened fire.

There was no need for him to alter the dial on his weapon — he cameexpectingto burn me from the galaxy’s Great Pattern.
