Spencer sputtered. “I don’t like your tone. And moreover, I don’t like hers.”I could practically hear him puffing up with self-importance.

“That’s too bad. She’s the best attorney at this firm and you’d do well to keep her happy, lest she decide to switch clients.”

He did not just imply I was going to fire Spencer as a client. I squeezed my eyes shut. This was going to come back to hurt me.

“I’ll be taking this up with Gerald,” Spencer finished lamely.

“Don’t even think about.”

I heard Spencer mutter something that sounded like a curse, before Andrew slammed the receiver down.

“Andrew.” My breath came short and my pulse whooshed in my ears.

“Fuck that guy!” He exploded and the force of his anger washed over me. “I’ll fucking kill him if he says anything to Gerald.”

“But what if he does?” I squeezed my eyes shut and took deep breaths. “I’m fucked. You can’t tell a client you’re going to fire them. I have to go to Gerald.”

“You can when they’re being an asshole for no reason.” His voice was hard. I knew he was right, but I would never dare.

“Margo. Look at me.” I opened my eyes and he was just inches away. His chest heaved.

“I promise you, I won’t let this come back to hurt you. I’ll handle it with Gerald. Ok?”

I searched his face. His jaw was set and his eyes blazed. I could see the tension in his frame. I desperately wanted to trust him, to let him handle this for me. What would the cost of that trust be?

“This is my worst fear.” Panic made my voice high. “Screwing up and having a client complain. It feels like evidence I don’t belong. Some days I feel like the world is just waiting for me to fail.” My voice broke.

He hauled me against him. “I know.” His hand smoothed over my hair and I shuddered before I finally relaxed into him. “Let me handle this for you. You don’t have to do everything alone.”

I stilled. Letting him handle this for me felt huge, momentous.Your joys will be doubled and your burdens halved. This was what he meant.

I nodded. “Thank you.”

He pressed his lips to my hair and I screwed my eyes shut to keep from crying.

“Someone could see,” I said into his chest.

“Let them see.” His voice was rough and for a moment I let myself melt against him. For a moment I imagined he was mine.

I think I’m falling in love with you.My heart tripped and when it started beating again, each thump told me this man was worth everything.

In the movies, realizations of love were accompanied by birds singing and music playing. All I felt was pain, pain edged with happiness. I was going to grab on with both hands. At least until this deal was done.

“Come on, Schwartz, just one more.”

“I fucking hate you.” Schwartz grumbled, hoisting my last box. “You make like $500k a year. You couldn’t get movers?”

We shouldered our way into the apartment dropped the boxes on the ground. I was winded, but Schwartz looked like he was about to have a coronary.

“Why would I get movers for one car load worth of stuff?”

Schwartz bent over his knees, wheezing, and gave me the finger.

I just laughed and grabbed him a beer and myself a water. “You gotta start working out with Matt in the mornings.”
