“The craziest thing happened today,” I said, as I traced my fingers along Margo’s shoulder.

She turned to face me, our pillows nearly touching. “What’s that?” She had a small, secret smile on her face.

“The woman I’ve been obsessed with for seven years agreed to be mine.” I couldn’t believe my luck. Everything in me felt settled with her close.

“Oh did she now?” Margo raised a brow. “I don’t recall that.”

“She did,” I growled, before hauling her to me and running my lips along her neck. She shuddered and I thrilled. “But I want her in deep, like me. I want to show her what it would be like to be mine. And then she can decide.”

She nodded, pressing against me, and I already knew the answer would be yes.

“I came up with a solution,”Margo’s voice came from below my chin. I had her tucked against my chest and I wasn’t planning to let her go.

“To what?”

“To the deal. There’s a revised term sheet with a binding commitment. They can’t back out. Well they can, but we can sue the shit out of them.”

I crushed her to me. “You’re fucking brilliant, you know that?”

“I do know,” she replied, laughing. “The thing is. I’m not even sure I want to make partner now.”

My stomach dipped and I pushed away from her so I could see her eyes. “Why not?”

“Well…Gerald turning on me for one. I’ve given them eight years of my life and at the first sign of trouble, he dumped me like I was a brand new associate. And then what you told me about him firing that woman who was harassed by a client. That doesn’t sit right with me either. I’m not sure I want to be a part of that.”

“They are absolute assholes, true. But you could do a lot of good as a partner there. You could change things.”

She made a considering sound. “Good point, but also, this is going to sound silly, but I don’t know if I want to be at the firm without you.” Her cheeks were delightfully pink.

“You just want to order me around, little tyrant.”

Her eyes went wide. “No! I just wish we could be partners together.”

“My father might be able to help with that. Let me see what I can do.” I pulled her against me again, the wheels turning. If I could have it all, I would hold on with both hands and never let go.

Margo

When I walked outside my building on Wednesday morning, Andrew was waiting downstairs for me. It was day three of being wooed by him and it was the most addictive feeling imaginable. Over the weekend, he’d taken me to dinner at a trendy Italian place in SoHo. Monday, he’d snuck little treats into my desk and had made sure we went home together.

And this morning he was here in a lovely herringbone wool coat with a tray of coffees sitting on the steps. His dreamy green eyes told me I was the sole focus of his world and I blushed a little under his gaze as I opened the door into the brisk morning. He hauled me against him and pressed his lips to mine, firm, warm, delicious. I melted into him, gripping the lapels on his fine wool coat as he teased my lips open with his tongue. He pulled away and gave me a soft smile. “Good morning. Happy Wednesday”

“Happy Wednesday.” I laughed a little at the ridiculousness of it all. “How long have you been down here?”

“Remember, you live above me. As soon as I heard your boot heels on the floor, I grabbed my coat.”

He bundled me into a cab and passed me a coffee. I sighed from happiness.

“Wait a second. What else have you heard in your apartment? Not anything weird, right?” I asked suspiciously.

“What kind of weird stuff should I be hearing?”

“Uhh, nothing.” My face reddened and he burst out laughing. He let his head fall back against the seat and I admired the strong planes of his face and his infectious happiness, even as I slowly died of embarrassment.

“I’m going to keep my ears open for anyweirdnessas you call it, but I hope you’ll be getting up to most of that weirdness with me.” He wagged his eyebrows and I groaned.
