“New doctor? You mean Bruce?”

“Yes, Dr. Jericho,” she answered. “Are there any problems?”

“No, it's just…was Mr. Allison okay?” I asked.

“It was just an appendix removal,” she answered. “I watched Dr. Jericho work, and he did a fantastic job.”

“I see. That's okay then,” I stammered with a nervous chuckle.

I excused myself and returned to the office. After taking a deep breath, I called Alex.

The older man answered the phone. “Good afternoon, Dr. Hill. How may I be of service?”

“About Bruce, has he been cleared to start working?” I asked.

“Yeah, I have noticed that he is very good at handling minor cases,” he responded. “So, I had him try bigger responsibilities. Eventually, he started volunteering to do other work in the hospital. He's been quite accommodating.”

“I thought he was going to work with me first before we started anything?” I asked.

“Considering you're preparing for your trip to Zurich, I felt this would be the only way we could help take the load off of you,” he explained. “But I wasn't the one who came up with this; Bruce did.”

“I see.”

“Am I in any kind of trouble?”

“What? No!” I shook my head to imply, “Never.”

“I was just shocked that I didn't have patients to attend to,” I explained.

“Well, that's a good thing, right?”

“Right.”

It was definitely a good thing. This was why I hired him in the first place, after all.

This was fine.

Everything was fine.

All I had to do was focus on other things.

****

I lied. I couldn't focus on anything. My preparations for Zurich were almost complete, so I decided to patrol the hospital and see if any of my staff needed my help.

“You don't have to do that now; Bruce already did it.”

“Yeah, about that problem. I talked to Bruce about it, and he gave me a good solution.”

“Oh, you don't have to worry about attending to me. Dr. Jericho will handle me,” an older and favorite patient said. “Why didn't you tell me you had such an eye candy now?”

“That's because I don't,” I muttered and forced a smile.

She didn't notice my sarcasm and just laughed, “Well, now you do.”

I went to the children's ward. All were asleep. The pediatrician on duty put away some books I didn't recognize.

“Where are those books from?” I asked.
