He had been in charge while I was away. He had a playboy attitude, but it was all on the surface; he never dated anyone or had a lover. At least, that's what the other nurses said about him.

“Good day, Mark,” I greeted.

“Welcome back, boss,” he grinned. “I was about to fly to Richmond to get you. Wondering if you had forgotten about Brian's anniversary.”

“I would never miss it for the world,” I insisted.

“Of course you won't,” he nodded. “So do you want to settle down first? Or should I give you the rundown of things?”

“Rundown, please,” I replied as I started to make my way to the office as soon as the kids let me go.

“So the funds for the new building have been progressing smoothly,” he said. “Donations to the hospital have been increasing, so we just diverted 10% to the hospital plans… and well, we're doing okay.”

“Thanks for the positive part,” I said. “Now, how are we really doing?”

“Not so good. The children's hospital has been improving, but I had to make some renovations,” he explained.

“I noticed,” I said as I looked around. The walls had been redecorated. “Nicely done.”

“So, was your mission successful?” he asked.

“What mission?” I feigned ignorance as I got into my office.

It felt like I hadn't been there in years; at the same time, it looked exactly how I left it. The only difference were the walls that had been repainted.

“The mission? You know, the one that made you leave in the first place after getting that shady call?” he asked, trying to bring my memory up to speed.

“The one you said you didn't like?” I asked.

“Yes.”

”Oh, in that case, it's actually going very well,” I responded. “She seems like she's finally trusting me. And I like it that way.”

“I still have my qualms about the situation, but I guess if no one gets hurt,” he said and shrugged.

I remembered Liam's warning. Just to refresh any slack memories, he was the man tailing Tabitha's older brother’s tryst partner. I got shivers down my spine. Nothing out of the ordinary had happened, giving me peace of mind.

“Everything will be fine,” I assured him.

When the organization approached, they had used my anger with Tabitha against me. Honestly, hearing that my plans for my new hospital were still in the works, I was worried that I would fall into a greater temptation. I would end up using Tabitha to achieve my goal.

“What's with the look in your eyes?” he asked, “You don't want to do it anymore, do you?”

“I don't think I want to do it,” I sighed.

“I understand,” he said. “Well, now you just have to tell her.”

After he said that, he left the office. Leaving me to my thoughts.

Chapter sixteen

The Lady and the Amazoness

Helena

Helena Hill, the last daughter of the Hill family referred to as the middle child, thanks to the one born outside wedlock. I'm very well aware of the fact that my siblings see me as a troublemaker with a sharp tongue. But that's only what my siblings see me as. I'm never afraid to speak my mind to them, but outside I don't raise my voice. The outside had done nothing wrong to me, so they didn't deserve my anger. But my family?

Lucas was the firstborn. He ruled like his purpose was to dominate the rest of us. He was monitoring us like our father did. He maintained that superior aura that made him come across to anyone outside that he was better than the rest of his siblings. George was the last born, a cowardly imp who wanted nothing but peace. You couldn't convince me that that man had not stained his hands several times over. He lived below the radar. He was acting like he was born a mistake.
