“Tabitha? When are you leaving for Richmond?” I asked.

She turned to say, “I'm not so sure.”

“Do you want to go on a date tomorrow?” I asked.

Chapter eighteen

Their Walls Slowly Crumbled

Tabitha

I collapsed on the hotel bed.

“Did something happen?” Helena asked.

“A lot of things happened,” was my response.

“Do you want to talk about it?” she asked.

I thought about it; it would be my first time properly discussing something like this with anyone. Helena and I had started rekindling our bond, which was a strange feeling. Considering that she was right about almost everything that happened at Bruce's hospital, I was better off talking to her.

“Are you busy?” I asked.

“Not right now,” she answered as she lay next to me. “Talk.”

“I saw Bruce,” I started to say.

“Yeah, you mentioned he would be in Maryland,” she remarked. “Wait, don't tell me he was the reason you came to Maryland in the first place?”

“What? No,” I denied the allegation. “Like I said, I just came to Maryland because I wanted to visit my darling little sister.”

“You don't have to patronize me,” she said as she pouted. “I knew it was too good to be true that you finally loved me.”

I didn't know Helena could be playfully dramatic. It started to make me wonder what other parts of my siblings’ lives I had missed out on.

“I'm sorry, Helena,” I apologized as I lay next to her body. “You are the only one I truly love.”

“You’re fat; get off me,” she complained as she struggled to free herself.

“How rude,” I stammered and frowned. “Don't you know it's wrong to body shame a lady?”

“Amazons don't count,” she insisted and tried to push me off.

If I had known messing around with my little sister would be this fun, I would have done it a long time ago. Now that I think about it, Helena had always been on her own. She didn't associate with the boys, and I didn't pay her attention either. I blamed Mom for not helping me with my first period, but I didn't do the same when Helena had hers. So much for being the type of woman everyone wanted to depend upon.

“I give, I give. I love you too,” she confessed.

“There, now, isn't free speech fun?” I asked as I got off her.

“Free speech, my ass. I almost died,” she complained. “But you seem a lot better now.”

“Helena, I'm sorry for being a bad sister,” I apologized. “I know it must have been hard handling everything on your own when you had a sister and a mother.”

“You get used to those things after a while,” she said. “You should have come through earlier.”

“It's okay, I won't let you down,” I assured her.

“Don't worry about it,” she said. “Now, tell me about what happened. Did you two fight? Or you saw him with another woman?”
