He sounded like he was in trouble. His breathing was ragged like he had spent all day running around. Although he sounded calm, it was used to tell that he was in a state of panic.

Higher power?

If he asked me for access to a higher power, it could only mean one person.

“You… want to talk with Mom?” I asked. “You realize it's like signing a deal with the devil.”

“My soul is a small price to pay to get my love back,” he responded. “Now tell me where the location is.”

“She told me not to give out her location,” I said. “I wouldn't mind the kind of deal you would want to make with her, but I wouldn't advise it either. Think of it as me being a kind little sister looking out for you. If you want, I know someone else that can help.”

“It has to be her. Please, I'm begging you,” he pleaded.

It was the first time I had ever heard Lucas beg anyone in his life. If it was that serious, I knew something definitely had to be wrong. I didn't stall for time anymore and immediately gave him the last location of our mother.

He thanked me before hanging up. I thought about Shawn and his warning. Could this have been interrelated? I had spent my time fawning over a love interest that I had barely kept in touch with any of my networks.

How clumsy of me.

“Get out.”

She said it in such a calm yet disappointed tone that I regretted not answering the first time she asked. I should have told her immediately what the problem was. The following day, I received a call. I recognized the number this time as the people who wanted me to get back with Tabitha.

“What do you guys want this time?” I asked in annoyance.

“Liam is dead.”

I remember the man who had called me to want me to stay away from anything I heard. I wasn't bothered by his death. It was what caused it that bothered me.

“I don't understand what this has to do with me,” I said.

“Let's hope for your sake he didn't spill a lot of things before Tabitha’s mother killed him,” they replied.

“Excuse me?”

It was the first I had heard of her mother. There was no way someone in her family could go as far as murdering someone.

“Was it a misunderstanding?” I asked.

“I have a feeling you do not know what you've involved yourself with. Nor the woman you're working for,” was all he said before he hung up.

When the organization reached out to me, I thought it was a group of medical people just interested in taking over her company. This was going too far and too deep.

A text came in from them, “Sit tight.” I wasn't going to sit tight and do anything. I needed to back out of this operation as soon as possible.

That would mean ending my mission and telling her the truth. What if she hated me immediately, I told her? I couldn't bear her hating me for what I had done, even if it weren't my intention. But at the same time, I couldn't stay silent forever.

Chapter twenty-one

The Shift in Power

Tabitha

“You should be more like your brother,” Mother said to me.

It was the next day after Lucas had called to help him out in contacting her. I was surprised to see her call. Both my parents never called, but Mother was sounding excited for some odd reason.
