I failed her. He could’ve hurt her…or worse.

Staying in the car isn’t going to work anymore. I’ll have to talk to Michael about staying inside her home.

She’s not going to like it. And imagining that face getting all pissy has me smiling. I like knowing I can push her buttons. I think she likes pushing mine too.

When she placed her hand on my cheek and told me to be careful, it did something to me. No one has ever worried about me. Not really. Not like her. She meant it too. I could just see it there in her eyes…

I try to keep silent as I near the assailant, his black hoodie and dark pants growing closer. Removing my nine-mil, I point it at him, aiming for his thigh, needing him alive. He will answer for this.

As soon as I fire a shot, he turns and releases one of his own, barely missing my face.

“You’re gonna die, motherfucker.” I chuckle, needing this, wanting a fight.

I can make out the glare in his dark eyes. Never seen him before. Don’t know what faction he belongs to, if any. But I will find out.

He shoots at me again, running faster, but I’m gaining on him. And soon, he will tell me why he came for her.

I aim the barrel at his leg as I continue to chase him toward the road I now find through the clearing.

I can’t let him get away.

I press the trigger, and a shot rings off right into his calf.

He instantly goes down.

I sprint toward him as he shifts his body to me, lifts up his weapon, and fires.

Crouching immediately onto the dirt, I evade the bullet, rushing for him. But just when I almost reach him, a car comes screeching down.

Two masked men fire shots at me while two others drag him away.

I shoot off a few bullets at the car, running toward it, but they press on the gas and gun out of there. No plates on the car, and nothing to go on.

“Fuck!”

Reaching into my pocket, I remove my cell, and when I do, my flashlight illuminates something on the grass.

A gold card.

A card I recognize. Michael was sure to show each man who works for him one of these so we knew how to spot it.

I instantly know what it is even before I pick it up off the ground.

Turning it over, I find a phone number there, just as expected.

Because the Bianchis, the ones who took Kayla, they operated their sex club using one of these.

The men call the number on the back, and someone in a mask picks them up, puts a bag over their face, and takes them to a secret location.

Without hesitation, I dial the number, expecting a voice, but instead, it’s a recorded message, obviously disguised by a cheap device.

As I listen to it, my blood boils over, needing to spill theirs.

“Elsie, Kayla, and Jade are ours,” the stranger informs. “And we will take them all back like we did the others. You can’t protect them. No one can.”

Yeah, we’ll see about that.
