Abort mission. Run far away and never look back.

“Sophie…”

“What? You don’t want to hear more about how I’m not that innocent?”

Holy shit. She was going to kill me.

I cleared my throat. “I get it. You’re not innocent. No need to get into detail.”

“I was just trying to tell you that I’ve had sex and I’ve experienced stuff, which means I can handle whatever you throw at me. So, go ahead.”

“What?”

“Try your charm on me. Flirt with me.” Her eyes boldly met mine again. “I dare you.”

I lived on challenges. I thrived on them, but Sophie was different. At the same time, I knew her ego would be hurt if I rejected her challenge. I couldn’t do that, not when her ex already did a number on her. The harrowing dilemma played like a ping-pong ball in my head before I threw it aside and decided to just go for it. Trying to play it off as casual, I smirked at her.

“You asked for it. Remember that.”

She smirked back, eyes gleaming and confident. I looked around, scanning the crowd and making sure everyone had been served and there were still no new customers. Then I turned back to her. I could tell she was expecting me to start right away. Instead, I thumbed strands of her hair that fell from her braid and tucked it back in. When I removed my thumb, her focus was on it.

“Has your hair always been this blonde?”

Confusion glinted on her face. “Yes. Why?”

I returned to the glass I’d placed down and offered it to her. She took a sip of the remaining drink.

“It looks great like that. I never realized how nicely it highlighted your eyes. I could get lost in those eyes, sweetheart.”

Her eyes widened, either because of the compliment or the nickname I used on her. But she recovered quickly, not even letting out a smile.

“Thanks, but that doesn’t sound very fun.”

“Getting lost in your eyes? Are you kidding me?” I leaned over. It was a subtle move to crowd her in and, at the same time, to mask our interaction from outside observers. The bubble of space hummed around us as I sighed. “It’s the best hobby in the world.”

“Are you sure about that? There’s no other hobby you’d rather enjoy?” she mused.

I would rather do her, but that was a statement best left unsaid. It was also shocking because I’d been behaving so well around her and these thoughts shouldn’t even cross my head.

“Oh, I have a lot of interesting hobbies. But your eyes that look like the ocean? The depth in them and how pretty they are?” I winked. “It trumps them all, darling.”

I waited for a blush or a shy smile, but none came. Sophie raised a brow.

“It does?”

“Completely. The best thing to do, second from seeing you smile.”

That finally tugged a smile out of her as she tilted her head.

“Oh, really? That’s sweet. It’s so sweet, in fact, that I could just lap it all up.”

I blinked, taken aback. Then I noted her mischief and realized she was turning the tables and flirting back. It was a new side to her that I didn’t expect, and I found myself responding with gusto.

“With the way you drank my liquid, I wouldn’t be surprised.”

“Hey, I sipped it delicately. That’s how I am. I take my time. I savor the sweetness.” She looked up, her smile coy. “You’re sweet. I wouldn’t mind savoring you.”

I blinked again, charmed, delighted, really, at how she made it sound so light and playful.
