“Yes, of course. We’re good.”

“Do you want to rest?”

It was an out, so I grabbed it quickly and nodded. Matthew was in motion immediately as he carried my bags to the back and showed me my bedroom, surprisingly decent in size with a comfortable-looking bed.

“This looks lovely.”

“It’s a spare. It was supposed to be a gym, but there’s already one beside my office, and I’m mostly in the office.”

“Right.”

“By the way, my roommate will be coming in late. Don’t get startled when you see someone else in the apartment.”

Did he mean his girlfriend? Of course, a sexy, mature, andkindman like him wouldn’t be single. The disappointment that thrummed through me shouldn’t be there, and I forced myself to swallow it back.

“Sounds great,” I chirped. Then, because I was grateful for what he was offering me, I tiptoed and hugged him again. “Thank you, Matthew.”

His skin was rough, the four-o’clock shadow already growing. I caught my breath, my hands fisting at my sides as my body jolted again at the physical contact. Gritting my teeth, I stepped back and desperately tried to act normal.

“You’re welcome, Sophie. Sleep tight.”

His smile highlighted his blue eyes before he turned away, giving me a view of that broad back. I was mesmerized, and I had just broken up with my boyfriend.

Get a grip. He has a girlfriend, too.

I took a deep breath.

Then I closed the door and refused to take another look.

Sleep should have come after all the emotions I went through, but it had to be a stubborn ass today and elude me. I tossed and turned, trying to get used to the new bed and the new environment. When it remained futile and my stomach started grumbling, I glanced at the clock, threw the blankets off, and trudged out.

Matthew’s kitchen was as sleek as his living room, with top-notch appliances and the prettiest slab of marble on the island counter. Not wanting to wake him up, I tiptoed around in the dark. The problem was that I didn’t know where everything was, so I ended up opening a couple of cupboards until I figured out where the food was stored. Without thought, I plucked boxes and bottles out of there, confident I could whip something up with—

The light came on, startling me into making a sound. I whirled, caught frozen with my hands clutching a bottle of pickles and two boxes of cornstarch. Great.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to bother you. I was just grabbing something to eat, Matt—”

No, he wasn’t Matthew, because the man in front of me had golden-blond hair and chocolate-brown eyes. He was probably around Matthew's age and had the most charismatic smile I’d seen in my life, with dimples that could melt panties.

Good thing I’m not wearing any.

I absolutelywasn’t thinkingthat.

There was surprise in his gaze as he took me in, far more intimate than it should have been. There was a question there, too, but he didn’t ask. Instead, he held out his hand.

“No, I’m not Matthew. I don’t think we’ve met. I’m Sebastian. Sebastian Malone, his roommate.”

CHAPTER 2

SEBASTIAN

There was a young and very attractive female tinkering around in our kitchen, wearing the tiniest shorts that emphasized her slim, smooth-looking legs. In fact, every scrap she was wearing was tiny, from the tank top that clung to her soft curves to the clip she had in her auburn-brown hair. She was a walking, breathing sight to behold, one I hadn’t expected to greet me in my apartment.

And she was utterly lost.

I caught her blue-green eyes, as clear as the ocean, when she turned and looked at me.
