I frowned. “She had an appointment today?”

“Earlier, yeah. Matt couldn’t get out of his meeting, and I swear I’m trying to get home fast. My cousin wanted to meet up and he only had this morning before he flew out of the city.”

“Why wasn’t I told any of this?” I asked impatiently, turning to give Sophie an accusing look. She got what the phone call was about and smiled at me sheepishly, then strode over and hugged me from behind.

“Because you would have canceled your appointment with your very important client, too.” At my continuous frown, she crooned. “Rup, don’t be mad, please. I promise it went fine for the most part. Also, I’m not an invalid. I can still do stuff on my own, you know.”

Sebastian chuckled on the line. “Go get him, sweetheart. Maybe you can seduce him on the couch until we get there.”

“Shut up, asshole,” I grumbled and hung up on him as he laughed boisterously. I glared at Sophie for good measure, but she continued batting her pretty lashes at me as she tugged me back on the couch. Then a thought occurred and I was on edge again. “What do you mean for the most part? What’s the deal? Is the baby okay? Are you okay? What the hell happened?”

“Relax. It’s just new information that I didn’t expect and I had to hurry and get new stuff.”

“Is the baby upside down?” I demanded. “Is he sick? Did you get medical stuff for some condition?”

She laughed and shut me up with a kiss. She wouldn’t laugh if there was a problem, would she? That relaxed me slightly and I sank into her touch. Sophie kept me distracted from asking more questions when she did end up seducing me, and I was so turned on by the time Sebastian and Matthew arrived. She squealed excitedly when Sebastian presented her with a colorful, Christmas-themed cake, then dragged them both to the living room with Matthew’s handful of gift boxes.

“Merry Christmas! We’re getting our expansion soon,” Matthew announced, grinning from ear to ear. “And I just put my foot down so your father won’t be my business partner, Soph.”

She smiled at that. “Good job.”

“Open your gifts,” Matthew said. “I got something nice for everyone.”

I caught the box tossed my way and was pleasantly surprised at the leather gloves that would go well with my new motorcycle. Sebastian beamed as he displayed his fancy new kitchenware, but I noticed Sophie suddenly acted nervous as she eyed the maternity dresses Matthew gifted her.

“Soph?” I asked.

She hurried off, slammed her bedroom door shut, and came back with a stack of smaller gifts for each of us.

“Open them,” she prompted.

I opened mine first and was puzzled at the pink handkerchief I got. Sebastian got a pair of ribbons while Matthew got a headband. We caught each other’s gaze and tried to approach her, but she held up a hand and shook her head adamantly. Then she placed her phone on the coffee table and stepped back.

“Now play that.”

Matthew did as asked, and the room filled with the doctor’s greeting and telling her to relax. Then we watched, our minds blown, as the ultrasound showed a beating heart and the doctor exclaimed over how healthy she was.

“She?” Sophie asked in the video, her voice shaking with joy.

“Yes, she. Congratulations, Sophie. You have a healthy baby girl on the way.”

The video went silent. I looked up at Sophie, who was beside herself.

“I know we all expected a boy since my morning sickness wasn’t that bad and I was craving salty food. I insisted on the old wives’ tale and we already bought boy clothes,” she blurted out. “But we can return them, and I hope you’re all okay with having a girl…”

Before she could finish her statement, I was on my feet and gathering her in my arms, then kissing her so hard to steal her nerves away. She kissed me back, then gasped when Sebastian picked her up from behind and twirled her.

“A baby girl. Holy shit. We’re going to be the most overprotective dads, aren’t we?” he mused.

“She’s not going to have a boyfriend until she’s thirty,” I muttered and had Sebastian laughing so hard that he let her go and clutched his stomach.

I rolled my eyes and bit back a grin before we all turned to Matthew, the blood father of the child in Sophie’s belly. He had been quiet during the whole exchange and was still quiet.

“Matthew?” Sophie asked, holding on to Sebastian and me for dear life.

He looked at me and Sebastian first, absorbing our reactions. Then he looked at Sophie, and I swore a physical softening took place even while he eyed her so intensely. He crossed the distance and kissed her, too, and in that kiss, I knew he was the happiest.

“You’ll be the greatest mom,” he declared, his voice raspy with emotion. “No matter if it’s a boy or a girl, I love our baby. And I’m so blessed to have you in my life.”

Sebastian hugged her again in agreement. I kissed her forehead, not saying a word but agreeing, too. Matthew was right. We were blessed, lucky… all of those positive adjectives and more.

And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
