The guy looked a little too happy about that. He wasn’t smiling, but his expression was far too relaxed as he turned back around and reached for the bag of chocolate-covered peanut butter cups.

“That’s not an option,” I said. “My brother’s getting married tomorrow. We have to get up there.”

“Your brother’s not even there. And neither is the bride.”

People were coming to town from all over for this wedding. Emerald’s family, my dad and stepmom, and even my high school bestie.

“We should cancel the wedding,” I said.

I reached for my phone, which I’d set on the table next to me. But before I could grab it, Maverick’s hand landed on top of mine. His touch sent warmth straight through me…a warmth that had nothing to do with his body heat.

And then I looked up to find him watching me. We locked in a stare that made my heart race. Thoughts flooded my mind—thoughts of kissing him, of having those hands on my bare back, moving over my butt. Thoughts of him touching my breasts. Touching me in all the places no one ever had.

The vibration of my phone beneath my hand made me jump. Maverick lifted his own hand and reached for the bag. He dug a peanut butter cup out of the bag and had the wrapper off before I glanced at my screen.

“The remote for the fireplace is next to the sofa,” I read aloud. “Hang out there until this lightens up.”

“I’ll take you to him,” Maverick said. “Do they have power?”

I asked and confirmed that yes, they had power.

“Yes.” I sighed. “Something he could have mentioned to me before we stopped here.

But there was no point in thinking about what we could’ve done differently. None of us could have known this snow would pick up.

I laughed when I looked at my screen again, then read, “If the power doesn’t come on by dinnertime, fire up the outdoor grill. There’s enough meat in the freezer to keep the two of you fed for days.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Maverick said.

I looked up at him. Was he kidding?

“You can’t go out there and cook on a grill.”

His eyebrows arched. “That sounds like a challenge to me. I never turn away from a challenge. Now, if you don’t mind, I’m going to go check out that fireplace situation.”

When he got up and exited the room, I couldn’t take my eyes off his backside. He left the leather jacket on the back of his chair, so now I was getting my first view of that denim-covered ass.

I was snowed in with the best-looking man I’d ever seen. My left hand immediately went to the promise ring on my right ring finger. Yeah, if the spark I’d felt between us was mutual, keepingthispromise was going to be almost impossible.

MAVERICK

Trudging out into the snow to fetch Abbie’s suitcase was well worth the effort. That became abundantly clear as soon as she emerged from the guest bedroom.

She’d changed into a pair of flannel pajama bottoms, but it was the top that caught my attention. A pink long-sleeve tee adorned with the name of a popular lingerie shop. The name sparkled, calling attention to her chest. The clingy top might be thick, but it did nothing to hide her curves.

“This is the warmest spot in the house right now,” I remarked, lifting the blanket in invitation.

I was seated on the loveseat, which was the closest piece of furniture to the fireplace. That made it ideal for staying warm during a power outage. But the best part of this loveseat was that there were only two cushions. I’d paired it with a shared blanket.

Yeah, I was definitely hoping to make a move.

“I’m not going to sleep with you,” she announced as she climbed beneath the blanket.

Those words were like a punch to my gut. Or maybe more like a punch to my balls. She’d given no indication she wanted to make out under this cover like a couple of horny teenagers. But my body had still been ramping up since she’d taken off with her suitcase for the guest bedroom.

Fine. No sex today. That didn’t mean I couldn’t get to know her. And maybe in time…
