I’d spoken to Sela. She admitted the truth at once. The entire confrontation went exceptionally well.

But I needed revenge. Knowing for sure who killed my mate, I’d thought, would be enough.

Turned out, it wasn’t. Not by a long shot. I required vengeance to live in any semblance of peace.

I called her to confirm that she didn’t have plans. She didn’t, other than going to the Midnight. I would meet them there.

She was eager to know what happened between me and Sela. Valentina was one of a kind in the human world and the supernatural one. I knew she was worthy once I met her. Honestly, the thing with Dean was troublesome, but it was her heart and courage that made me and the coven want to join the fight.

Now, I needed her help again. I would make sure to make it up to her.

“Good evening,” I said, flashing my fangs. It was a private joke between me and the descendant of Circe. She liked me to talk like the stupid vampires in movies.

“Ohh, that one was kind of scary. Want a drink? I got the good stuff.” She held up a bottle from behind the bar. The smell of metallic, life-giving blood was unmistakable, even encapsulated in glass.

“Sure. I’ll take one.”

She poured it in a glass and slid it over the bar in between regular customers.

“Did you find her?” It was Onyx who breached the subject of Diana. I knew it, though her question was vague.

“I found her easily enough. She told me the truth. After decades, she probably thought it wouldn’t bother me. But it does.”

Onyx slid over behind Valentina. “Did you take care of it?” she asked. I knew what she meant.

I rolled the blood around in my glass, not taking a sip yet. “I cannot. She is my sire. While she has no respect for the few laws that govern vampires, I do. I cannot take the life of one of my sires unless she’s gone on a killing spree that would threaten our secrecy, or what’s left of it. Everyone, including humans, knows about vampires now.”

Onyx’s cold stare met mine. She wasn’t a cold person but there was a killer inside her. It was the way Dean raised her. A sheathed sword. A monster under the covers. A gun locked away. “Are you asking for help, Erik?”

“I want to see her burn.”

By this time, Bishop, Storm, and Fox, along with Asher had come over, joining the conversation without participating.

“Are you sure she did it?” Bishop asked. “Did she confess it to you? Are you truly sure?”

“She did. If I could do it myself, I would.”

Bishop scrubbed his hand against the back of his neck. “If she went against that law, then there are probably more things she’s done. Do you think she’s a danger to the city?”

“I do,” I admitted. “Her coven grows by the day. It looks like a power play to me. We vampires are prone to those.”

Bishop and Valentina shared a look. I recognized the conversation between mates. No words needed. It ended with him nodding.

“Take us to her.”

“We’re coming, too,” Onyx said. “No one goes alone on quests. Gang rules.”

“We are not a gang,” Valentina said. “We are a…”

It was Fox who spoke up the loudest. Funny, since he was usually the quietest. “We are a pack. Period. Packs can have all kinds of people. As long as we are loyal to each other, we’re a pack, but this one has no alpha. We don’t need one.”

Valentina nodded. “Pack business, here we come.”

It was a long drive to Sela’s coven. By the time we got there, it was almost dawn. Bishop commented that it was the perfect time. He and I were on the same wavelength.

They let us in fairly quickly once they saw Valentina and Onyx. Those two females were like celebrities in the city. Sela was excited to see them.

“To what do I owe this visit?” Sela asked Valentina.
