Jake saw Rakell’s face harden as he extended his hand to the guy. “No problem. Jake Skyler. Nice to meet you.”

“Uh, Jeff…” He met Jake’s hand. “Oh, yeah, wow, Jake Skyler, nice to meet you too. Sorry again, I, I really didn’t mean to,” he stammered, turning to walk away.

“No problem,” Jake mumbled.

Rakell shifted off the machine, seething from his possessive demonstration. “What the fuck was that?”

Leaning into her, he matched her hard face. “That was a boyfriend kissing his girlfriend,” he hissed.

She grabbed his forearm, wishing she could hit him. “Is that what we are?”

Shaking her hand away, he cupped her shoulders, his thumbs pressing into the flesh next to the straps of her sports bra. “What the hell?! Yes, I thought that’s what we were doing. You think I’m just hanging out to kill time?” he spat out, squelching the urge to squeeze her shoulders harder.

She jerked back from his hands, her gaze undeterred. “No, I thought you were hanging out to decide”—her chin jutted out—“if I am pure enough for you to fuck.” She jeered, spinning around. “I’m tired of this,” she blew out, marching away, angry whispers flying from her mouth. “Waiting for theSkyler Purity Seal of Approval…what a fucking joke.”

“Rakell,” he called out to her back. “Hey you,” he yelled, striding after her, but she didn’t look back. “Damn it,” he said to himself, stopping as he realized she wasn’t going to turn around, not wanting to make a scene.

Rakell sped up to a jog, determined to get out of the gym without screaming or crying, both warring reactions escalating within her. Grabbing her bag from the locker, she ran to her car and drove off angrily, tears streaming down her face. He had taken a serious step back after she’d opened up to him.He acts like a possessive caveman, yet he doesn’t know if he wants me?Now she was awaiting a Jake Skyler verdict, almost begging to be accepted by him. That thought made her cringe as she wipedaway her tears. Then she screamed into the car, “Fuck him! I can’t wait around. No, I’m not going to wait around for any man to approve of me, not even him.”

Jake felt like he was back in high school. It seemed like she was playing games with him, but at the same time, her reactions appeared genuine. For the first time in his life, he cared enough to think things through, to try to figure her out. He waited a few hours before he texted her. He wanted to talk so he could understand her reaction.

Jake:Can we talk?…Send

Jake (Two hours later):Called, no answer, can we meet before you leave?...Send

Jake:We can’t just let this go…Send

Jake:Radio silence…what the fuck?…delete

Jake:Grow the fuck up…delete

She had read his texts but didn’t know what to say. She didn’t want to talk to him and get sucked up in his questions. She couldn’t hear herself justify her life one more time. No, she was done with that.

The next day he called her five times, then sent another text, his mind splintering between anger and desperately wanting things to be okay.

Jake:Rakell we need to talk, please…Send

Rakell:(To Jonathon)How do I deal with a judgmental prick who I like?...Send

Jonathon:Only one way…sex…Send

Rakell:That’s the problem…he’s withholding until he decides I’m worthy…Send

Jonathon:You may need to say…NEXT!...Send

She was exhausted by the emotional energy that swirled around her and Jake. As she was packing, her phone buzzed repeatedly.

Jake:You’re leaving town tomorrow, right…Send

Jake:Really need to talk before you leave…Send

Jake:I’m calling you now, please answer…Send

Rakell:Can’t talk now…Send

Jake:Then when?...Send

Rakell:When I get back…Send
