His hand slid to her ass. “You really do need to be spanked,” he whispered, thinking,There’s so much I wanna do to you, for you, with you.

“Mm…mm,” she said, quickly glimpsing toward the security line. “I better go.”

He kissed her, releasing her. “Miss you already.”

She stepped back. “Me too.” She was so unused to this way of communicating.

She started walking away, then felt him grab her arm from behind. Rakell turned, finding a smug grin on his face.“Another thing, most girlfriends send tons of titty photos to their boyfriends when they're away,” he said, squeezing her arm.

The corner of her mouth twisted up. “Really?”

He nodded, grinning.

“Fair enough. I’ll expect a lot of cock shots, big boy.” Winking, she pivoted on one foot toward the line, listening to his deep, rumbling laugh trail behind her.

Driving home, her comments rippled through his head—never really had a boyfriend…you’re the first person I’ve had sex with that didn’t pay for it…I want it to be special…first time in a real relationship—his brain was having a hard time threading everything together. How could a woman as beautiful as she was, as confident, as ballsy as…but then her naïveté, her fearful reactions, her desperate words stopped his thoughts. She really was a tangled confluence of confidence and insecurity, bawdy and innocent, bold woman and shy girl. Sometimes, it seemed like too much to wrap his head around. He thought about the simplicity of his parents’ relationship, the straight path of their lives, thinking that’s how he saw his life, his future, yet Rakell was the woman he was in love with, and her life had been anything but a straight path.

Rakell:About to take off, miss you already…Send

Jake read it, smiling.

She texted again when she landed a few hours later.

Rakell:Landed, really miss you…Send

Jake:You’re a quick learner. Call you later…Send

Jake:Matt, any chance we can chat…Send

Matt:Sure…Send

He wanted to talk to someone who knew her, someone who knew the whole story. “Hi, Matt, how are things?” he asked, sounding nervous. He and Matt had exchanged numbers the night Jake had brought her home from the bar.

“Good, I’m good, Jake.”

Grasping for something to say Jake started with, “I read that your uncle is running for Senate. I’m sure he’ll do well since he’s been a congressman for several years.”

“Yes, he is, but it’s complicated for me since his platform is basically the antithesis of my life…but I’m sure you didn’t call to get an earful of my family dynamics. I heard you and Rakell were working things out. She just texted me from the plane. Glad to hear it,” Matt said, cautiously optimistic.

“Yep, but I’m…well, I wanted to talk to someone that really knows her. I mean, she told me some things, and I’m not sure, well…” Jake started but hesitated, uncertain how to proceed.

“Okay, anything I can help with, but I’m not clear on what you’re talking about. She’s an amazingly strong person, considering everything she’s been through,” Matt said.

“Yeah, I don’t know. I mean, she said I was her first boyfriend…then last night when she’d been drinking, it came out that she’d never been with someone…” Jake stopped himself, feeling like he was betraying her.

“I know what you’re going to say. Yes, that’s true. I encouraged her to date more once she moved to Austin, but it was too hard to be under the radar considering her situation. Actually, mine as well—you were kind of a snag in the plan.” Matt let out a soft laugh. “Jonathon and I tease her that only Rakell would end up with an NFL star as her first boyfriend.”

“Never really thought about it from that angle. Guess this hasn’t exactly been smooth for her either.”

“Give it time, Jake. I think you guys can figure things out, but in every situation, it takes time. I know she’s guarded, but withgood reason…trauma doesn’t just magically go away—especially when it sends a person on a different path.”

“I suppose being an escort…”

“I’m sure that contributed to her being closed off…but I also know there’s a lot of depth to her, and her capacity for love is huge. It’s just wrapped up a little tighter than most people.”

“I guess I’ve never really taken the straight path…”

“So you understand then,” Matt said. “Also, Jonathon and I would appreciate it if you and Rakell came to Houston for a weekend. Well, you know that she’s like a sister to me. With that said, I know you are part of her life, and I’d like to get to know you better.”
