“As long as he’s legal,” she shrugs.

I shake my head, not believing the words that come out of her mouth. Although, I’m not sure why. “Why are we friends again?”

“Because you love me. But seriously, you should jump on this opportunity. Live a little. You’ve said it yourself; you’ve given the last eight years of your life to that douchebag. You deserve a little happiness and fun.”

“I’ll be thirty in a few weeks; besides, I’m not sure I’m ready for a relationship. Not after everything that has happened.”

Kiara lifts her brows. “Who’s talking about a relationship?”

“I’m not a hookup kind of girl. I want a boyfriend. I want a family. You know that.” We’d both been in foster care for the better part of our lives, and after being passed by so many times, my biggest dream was to have a family. Somebody to call my own. Although, do I really need a husband for that? No. No, I don’t. Nothing in my life has been traditional up until now, so why not? My mind starts whirling with all the ideas.

“Ness?”

“I’m thinking.”

“About?”

“Maybe I don’t need a guy to get what I really want after all.” I blink, Kiara’s serious face coming into focus. “I could do IVF.”

“Vanessa, you shouldn’t…”

I stop her before she can continue. “Being a mom has always been my biggest desire, you know that. And after everything that happened with John…”

“I do know that,” Kiara places her hand over mine, giving it a firm squeeze. “But I also know you’re hurt by everything that’s happened, so you shouldn’t make any big decisions right now.”

“You were all happy for me when I told you about sleeping with Quinn.”

“That’s one thing. It’s just some harmless fun. God knows you deserve it. IVF…”

“I just don’t want to wait and hope there’s going to come another guy who’ll make my dream a reality only to be disappointed all over again and lose more time.”

“I know, and I’m not saying not to do it, just… give it a little bit of time?” With one final squeeze, she pulls back and grabs her glass. “And in the meantime, you can enjoy your newfound freedom.”

“I can’t do it. It’s not right.”

Not to me, and certainly not to Quinn. Besides, I’m sure we’d be breaking all the rules.

She tips her glass at me and winks. “But it felt so damn good, didn’t it?”

CHAPTERFIVE

QUINN

“Seriously, dude? That’s like the fifth time,” Ashton complains as my player shoves him and grabs the ball. “Who pissed you off this morning?”

“You’re just angry you’re losing,” I mutter as I dribble the ball across the court, my fingers pressing on the controller with more force than necessary. My friends try to catch up to me, but I’m too fast, my player jumping off the ground and slam dunking it.

“Ignore him,” Nate waves him off. “He’s been grumpy this whole weekend. Ever since he left early from Moore’s on Thursday.”

“Yeah?” Ashton looks from Nate to me. “What gives?”

“God only knows. He was annoyed before he left…”

“What did you do?” Ashton interrupts.

“We just teased him a little about Vanessa.”

Ashton’s head snaps in my direction. “Seriously? You’re still into her?”
