Page 20 of Kiss To Tempt

“I’m not still into her,” I groan, rubbing my hand over my face; at the same moment, Nate says: “He’s still into her.”

I glare at my best friend. “Seriously, can we not?”

“What? I’m just telling the truth. He got pissed whe—”

“I didn’t get pissed. I left because I couldn’t stand to listen to any more of your nonsense.” I toss my controller on the coffee table. “I’m going to get more beer.”

I can feel their gazes on me as I make my way to the kitchen, hear their hushed voices the moment I’m out of the earshot.

So what if I’m one moody bastard? After this weekend, I have every right to be. It wasn’t either of them that woke up from the best sex of their life, only to find an empty and cold bed.

She left. Vanessa fucking left. She sneaked out of my house like a thief in the middle of the night.

I knew it was too soon and that we should have waited, but she seemed so sure, and who was I to tell her she wasn’t? A fucking idiot, that’s who.

And she didn’t just sneak out. She also avoided me. When I couldn’t casually stumble into her in the hallway—and trust me, I tried—I tried for a more direct approach. Like knocking on her door, but she never answered.

Want to admit it or not, she was avoiding me.

I pull open the fridge, grabbing three beers out of it before slamming the door shut.

Did she regret it? Was that it? Or even worse, was it not as good for her as it was for me?

No, I shake my head as I make my way back to the living room. It was good for her. I felt her body melt under my touch. She wanted it. Physically, she was all in. Mentally, though…

Absentmindedly, I hand Nate and Ashton a beer before taking my seat.

“Wanna play?”

“Nah.” My gaze darts toward the door. Maybe I should try again? I take a sip of my beer. Yeah, maybe I’ll d—

“Seriously, dude. I don’t see why you’re so grumpy. I mean, it’s not like you put yourself out there, and she brushed you off or something.”

I choke on my drink, and of course, neither of them misses it.

“What the hell?” Nate’s eyes narrow.

“Did something happen?” Ashton asks, suddenly way more interested in me than the game.

“Nothing happened.” I wipe my mouth with the back of my hand.

Ashton’s brows shoot up. “Then why did you almost swallow your tongue just now?”

“I didn’t…” My friends both give me a pointed look. “Oh God, okay, you wanna know what happened? I saw Vanessa after I got back home from Moore’s on Thursday. She was upset because she found her boyfriend cheating, and since she left her keys in her car and was clearly upset, I invited her over to our place until she calmed down, but then after a few drinks, she suddenly kissed me…”

“You’re shitting me,” Nate says, a grin spreading over his face.

“It’s not funny. She was upset, and I tried to do the right thing…”

“I bet you did,” Ashton smirks.

“I did! I told her we shouldn’t be doing this, but she wanted it. Well, fast forward to the next day, I woke up, and she was not there. I tried looking for her but haven’t seen her.”

“Oh, man!” Nate bursts into laughter. “Are you that shitty of a lay?”

“Screw you, Nate.”

I start to get up, but he grabs my elbow and tugs me down. “Sit down. We’re just shitting with you.”
