Page 39 of Kiss To Tempt

“Irresistible, my ass.”

She tries to make her voice stern, but the smile tugging at the corner of her mouth betrays her.

“Deny it all you want, Ness. But we both know the truth.”

She can pretend all she wants that this isn’t a date, and all we have is sex, but there is more between us. It’s slowly building, but it’s there, and I’m not about to let go without giving this thing between us a fair shot.

“Eat your ice cream before it melts.”

After that, we changed the subject to some easier topics as we finish our ice cream. It’s fun to get to know her outside of the center. We actually have a lot in common. We share the love for indie rock bands, preferLord of the RingsoverHarry Potter, we both have a sweet tooth, and would rather stay in. We also agree that Sundays are for staying in PJs all day and not doing anything.

On our way out, I say goodbye to Mama Lou, promising that I’ll come visit soon, and then we make our walk back to our cars and drive back home.

“I had fun tonight, Ness,” I say softly, turning her around as we come to her door, so she faces me.

“Me too. Thanks for the ice cream.”

“No problem.” I slip my finger under her chin, tracing the curve of her lower lip with my thumb. “Next time, you’ll have to try something different.”

“I honestly don’t see what’s wrong with strawberry ice cream.”

“It’s safe.” I lean down and press my mouth against hers. I can still taste the strawberries on her lips, and I can’t resist dipping my tongue between her parted lips.

Breaking the kiss, I take a step back. Or I would if Vanessa’s fingers didn’t curl around my shirt.

Her eyelashes flutter open, those big brown eyes staring at me as if in a haze, rosy lips still slightly parted. “Or you could come inside?”

CHAPTERNINE

VANESSA

“Okay, so we have some snacks and drinks…” I look at our cart, trying to figure out if we’re missing something. “Do you think we need anything else?”

I look up to find Kiara grinning widely at me. “We’re missing the most important thing.”

“What?”

I figured we got all we needed, but maybe she wants something else?

Kiara rolls her eyes at me. “Alcohol, duh.”

“Kiara!” I hiss, grabbing her hand and pulling her to a stop. “You know we can’t drink in public.”

Kiara shrugs out of my grasp and continues walking without a care in the world. “That’s why we’ll go back to your place, mix our drinks in one of these,” she picks up two matching sports bottles off the shelf and lifts them in the air, “and bring those with us.”

“You’re crazy.”

“No, the law is crazy. We’re freaking thirty. Why shouldn’t we be drinking out in the park when celebrating a national holiday like the freaking adults we are?”

I guess she’s right about that, but still… “Maybe we should just bring this all to my place and create a make-shift beach out on my balcony?”

There’s no need to hide booze then. Plus, we’ll be all alone and not surrounded by half the town who’s decided to celebrate the Fourth of July in the park.

“That’s in the shade for most of the afternoon? I think not. This is my one last chance to get some tan this summer because, for the rest of it, I’ll be stuck in the office.”

She pulls the cart toward the drinks section, and I follow dutifully after her.

“That busy at work?”
