Page 40 of Kiss To Tempt

“Don’t even get me started on it.” Kiara tucks her black braids behind her ear. “We got a big case a few weeks back, and my boss has been riding my ass ever since. Like dude, maybe if you did something besides fuck your secretary, the case would be solved much quicker, you know?”

I almost choke on my tongue at her harsh words. Not that I should actually be surprised. This is Kiara. That woman doesn’t know how to bite her tongue. There wasn’t a person more surprised than me when she said she’d go to law school or when she actually graduated—with all honors too. It’s like there are two different people inside of her. First is my no-nonsense best friend, who can bite somebody’s head off just for looking at you funny. Then the cold-hearted attorney who will wrap her insults in such a pretty package you won’t even know what hit you.

“You’re so bad, Kiara.”

“I just say it as I see it.” She shrugs. “The corporate world sucks sometimes.”

“It sure does.”

That’s why I love my job. There’s no hierarchy, no people hanging over my shoulder, monitoring my every move. Although, honestly, sometimes the kids could be much harsher, but even their brutal honesty is better than people talking bullshit behind your back.

“Screw him. Today is all about relaxation and fun.”

“Amen, sister.”

“I’m so happy that you agree with me.” She turns around, so she’s facing me and continues walking backward. “So, tell me, how’s it going with your Boy Toy?”

“Kiara!” I look around, worried that somebody might have heard her. “Don’t call him that.”

“Call him what?”

I yelp in surprise and turn around to find Quinn and Nate standing behind me, watching us expectantly.

“Shit! You scared me,” I protest, my hand flying to cover my rapidly beating heart.

“Sorry, I figured you heard me call out to you.”

“Nope.” I let out a shaky breath and rub at my chest. Seriously, one day this guy will give me a heart attack.

Quinn steps forward, his hand falling on my shoulder, worry shining in his eyes. “Hey, are you okay?”

“Fine. Just need a moment to collect myself.”

“Next time, I’ll try to announce myself.”

“Or, you know, try not to sneak up from behind my back?” I suggest, letting out a nervous chuckle.

“Or I could do that, I guess.” The corner of Quinn’s mouth lifts in a half-smile. “Although, what would be the fun in that?”

I give him a shove. “The fun part would be not giving me a heart attack.”

“And miss seeing that look on your face?”

“Quinn McLannister!”

“You’re in some deep shit, bro.” Nate elbows Quinn in the side. “The next thing she’ll do is pull your middle name.”

I narrow my eyes at Quinn. “I would if I knew it.”

“Hear that? Deep-freaking-shit.”

“Oh, shut it, Nate.” Quinn slaps him over the head before turning his attention back to me. “What are you two doing here, anyway?”

“Some last-minute shopping,”

Quinn looks between the two of us. “Anything exciting planned?”

“We’re grabbing some supplies to spend the afternoon sunbathing, drinking, and not doing anything,” Kiara says, dropping our bottles into the cart.
