Nate leans against his cart. “Are you going to a party?”

“Nah.” I tuck a strand of my hair behind my ear. “It’s just the two of us, so we’ll go to the park and chill.”

“You should come with us.”

I blink, unsure if I heard Quinn correctly. “What?”

To come to a party with them? To his friend’s house? He can’t be serious, can he?

“A teammate of ours is having a party. You should come.”

“They have a pool, too.” Nate wiggles his brows and points at his cart. “Plus, we’re bringing the good stuff.”

For the first time, I noticed it was filled with different bottles of alcohol.

Before I can even open my mouth, Kiara answers: “Sold. We’re in.”

“Kiara!” I turn around but find my best friend grinning.

“What? They have boozeanda pool. There is no pool in the park.”

“‘Cause it’s a park,” I point out. My palms are clammy, and my stomach twists into a knot from my nerves.

I can’t go to his friend’s house! What will they say? Some of them have probably been volunteering at the center. They’ll recognize me and wonder what that old chick is doing crashing their party.

“Yeah, well. Now I want a pool.”

Of course she does.

I rub at my forehead, suddenly feeling the headache loom behind my temples. “Won’t your friend mind?”

“That we brought two hot chicks?” Nate gives me a once-over before shifting his attention to Kiara. “No way in hell.”

“More like two old chicks to a college party,” I mutter, my stomach clenching.

Quinn wraps his fingers around my wrist and tugs me closer. I tilt my head back to look up at him. “It’s just a few friends hanging out for the Fourth of July. Not really a college party. Plus, if you want to be technical about it, I’m no longer a college student.”

I guess he’s right about that.

“C’mon, V.” Kiara pokes me in the side playfully and bats her eyelashes at me. “Live a little.”

I narrow my eyes at her, promising to make her pay later. Shifting my attention to Quinn, I find him watching me silently. Waiting.

He rubs the inside of my wrists with his thumb, making a shiver run down my spine. “What do you say, Ness?”

* * *

“I hate you for this,” I say for what feels like the hundredth time in the last half an hour.

Kiara, completely unfazed by my threats, smirks. “Keep saying that. Maybe you’ll believe it after a while.”

The worst part? She’s right.

Not that I’m going to admit it out loud.

I glare at her over the hood of her car as I pull out my bag from the backseat.

“You know squinting like that causes wrinkles, right?”
