“Thank you both for doing this. The kids were so excited when I told them about the summer camp. With the majority of our volunteers being away for the summer, they don’t have that much to do here over the break.”

“It’s not a problem.”

This center has been my home in more ways than one, and I was happy that I could now give the same thing to another kid like me.

“McLannister, you coming or what?” Nate yells once again.

I start to walk backward, wanting to keep my attention on her for as long as possible. “I guess I’ll see you later.”

Vanessa smiles. “Later.”

CHAPTERTWO

VANESSA

I look up from my computer only to find the last rays of bright oranges and reds fighting with the deep, dark blue of the night sky on the horizon—my gaze darts toward the bottom of my laptop screen.

7:47 p.m.

Damn,I pinch the bridge of my nose.Where did the time go?

It seems like I only sat down an hour ago to place a few orders for the center. But it’s never just a few orders. It’s the middle of the summer, which means we have more kids around the center than usual. With school done and parents having to work, this is our busiest time of the year, and I had to place more orders than usual to stock up on supplies—anything from arts and crafts materials, to sports equipment, snacks, and hygiene products.Bright Havensupplies it all, and we never ask questions. Not if we see a specific kid always sneaking extra snacks in their pockets or if we notice a kid taking a shower in the center every day, although they didn’t participate in any sporting activities.

Everybody has a story. It isn’t up to me or the volunteers to question or judge them if they don’t want to come directly to us for whatever reason.

Grabbing my phone, I check my messages, the first one instantly bringing a smile to my face.

Kiara:

Tell me again, why am I working this stupid ass job?

I hate my boss. He’s the biggest douchebag ever.

Tacos and margaritas this weekend? PLEASE. I need it. BAD.

Chuckling at the stream of messages from my best friend, I quickly type back.

Me:

You know it.

Kiara:

Thank fuck. I need this like yesterday.

Me:

Text me the details.

Exiting the message with a shake of my head, I look at the one just below it. It was sent over an hour ago.

I tap at the screen, my throat going tight as my eyes fall on the message I sent this morning to my boyfriend.

Me:

Hey babe! How about dinner tonight? We haven’t been on a date in a while.

John:
