It’s just for the summer,I remind myself.Just for the summer, before he leaves wherever his new job takes him.

And I’m planning to enjoy every minute I have left.

CHAPTERELEVEN

QUINN

“So you got the job?” Nate yells from the kitchen.

My attention is still focused on my phone as I re-read the email for what seems like the hundredth time. “It would seem so.”

“I’d have thought you’d be happier.”

I look up to find my friend leaning against the doorway, a water bottle in his hand.

“I’m happy, it’s just…” I rub at my jaw, a day-old stubble scratching my fingers.

“That’s not the job you wanted,” Nate summarizes.

“Yeah,” I let out a sigh and lean back. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy they’re interested, but I hoped I’d at least hear by now from Blairwood High.”

“Still no word?”

I shake my head. I was really hoping I’d get at least an email back, even if it’s just them telling me they don’t have a position open for me or something.

My phone buzzes once again. I look at the screen, noticing the email icon on top. I’m about to delete it, thinking it’s one of the many newsletters, but stop at the very last second when I read the sender’s name.

My heart starts beating faster, palms turning clammy as I quickly tap on the message, cursing the phone when it takes its sweet time opening it.

Dear Mr. McLannister,

Thank you so much for your application. We would like to invite you to join us for a job interview at Blairwood High on July 28th…

I re-read the email once again, my fingers gripping my laptop tightly.

“Quinn?”

“I got the interview.”

Nate’s brows furrow in confusion. “Interview?”

“Blairwood High. I just got their email.” I look down once again, re-reading it just to make sure before facing Nate. “They finally invited me for an interview!”

Nate pushes off the doorway and slaps me over the shoulders. “That’s great, man, congrats!”

“Thanks. I mean it’s just an interview, but…”

“You got it, and you’re going to smash it. Seriously, if they don’t give it to you, they’re idiots.”

“Well, let’s hope so.” I get up from the sofa, too jittery to keep sitting. I’m not sure why I’m so nervous. After all, this is what I’ve been hoping for this whole time.

Leaning against the railing, I look down to the road just to see a familiar truck pull into the parking lot.

Okay, scratch that. I know exactly why I’m jittery. I’ve always wanted to stay in Blairwood, but now with Vanessa in the picture, I want it more than ever. What will she think of this new development? Will she want me to stay? Or does she still want to end this thing between us at the end of the summer?

You just got an interview. God knows if you’ll even get the job. Chill.

I guess there’s that. Maybe I’ll keep it to myself until after the interview, when I know realistically what my chances are.
