“Hey, pretty girl,” I yell as soon as Vanessa gets out of her truck.

She looks around, trying to figure out where I am.

I whistle. “Up here.”

She tilts her head back, a smile curling her lips. “What are you doing?”

“Looking. What areyoudoing?”

“I just got home from work.” She pulls the back door open and grabs a few bags from the seat before closing it and locking her car.

“Wait, I’ll come down.

“Of course you will,” Nate smirks knowingly.

“I thought you were studying for your test, Nate.”

“Oh, shut up. I’m studying.”

What he’s been doing is trying to come up with excuses as to why not to study all afternoon. Not in the mood to fight him. I walk into the apartment and out in the hallway. Taking two steps at a time, I meet Vanessa halfway.

“You should have waited for me,” I grab the bags from her hands. “I would have helped you.”

“You know I’ve been carrying my own bags my whole life, right?”

“So? Doesn’t mean I can’t help.” I look down at her. “How was work?”

“Good. Quiet for a change.”

“Is that even possible?”

“Occasionally,” Vanessa chuckles as we climb to our floor. She pulls out a key and unlocks her door, giving me a look over her shoulder. “It’s not really common, but there’s an odd day here or there. Don’t worry, though. By tomorrow something will happen, and we’ll return to the usual chaos.”

I follow her inside her apartment.

“Where do you want me to put these?”

“Counter is okay. I’ll be there in a bit; I just want to get out of these shoes. They have been killing me.”

Putting the bags on the counter, I turn around and lean against the doorway, watching her work the tiny straps around her ankles.

“They look sexy as hell.”

She slips her foot from the shoe, her gaze meeting mine. I’m about to push away from the doorway, so I can kiss her when Nate calls out my name before poking his head through the front door.

“Yo, Patrick just texted. He wants to play ball. You going?”

“Weren’t you studying?” I ask, crossing my arms over my chest.

“Ehh, I’ll do it later.” He waves me off, his attention back on his phone. “I’ll tell him we’ll meet him at the court in fifteen?”

“Sounds like a plan.” I shift my attention to Vanessa. “What are your plans?”

“Get the groceries out, pour some wine, and chill for the evening.”

She starts toward the kitchen, but I get in her way. “Or you could come with us?”
