“We’ll have to rectify that. And soon. You haven’t tried anything until you’ve tried their chicken wings.” I tilt my chin at her. “Good?”

“The best,” Vanessa murmurs, covering her mouth with the back of her hand as she finishes chewing.

I watch her for a moment before grabbing my own burger and taking a bite. Damn, she was right. It’s a pretty damn good burger.

“See?” Vanessa grins, picking up a fry. “It is the best. Next time you should try a chicken sandwich.”

“I’ll have to.”

For a while, we just eat in companionable silence. It’s nice. Simply sitting here with her. Would it be like this if she gave us a real chance? If I got this job? I could try to sneak out every once in a while during the lunch break and bring her something to eat. Sneak a few kisses before going back to school. God knows she can get fixated on work easily, putting everything and everybody above her own needs.

“So…” Vanessa puts her sandwich back in the box. “How did the job interview go?”

“Good.” I swallow my bite and wipe my mouth. “They should make a decision soon and call me with their final answer.”

Vanessa nods. “That’s amazing, Quinn. Congrats.”

“Well, don’t congratulate me just yet. Nothing is final.” I take the last bite of my burger, leaning back in my chair.

“Did you hear back from any of the other places you interviewed for?”

“Some,” I shrug. “But this is the one I really want.”

I wait for her to ask me more. Ask what kind of job and where, or why is this one, in particular, the one I want so badly, but it seems like she’s lost in her thoughts for a moment, then she gives her head a shake and smiles.

“Fingers crossed, you’ll get it.”

“Yeah, fingers crossed.”

CHAPTERTHIRTEEN

VANESSA

“Sorry, I’m late!” I rush toward Kiara, my breathing ragged. I’ve been running ever since I got out of the community center after dealing with a fight between two girls. Seriously, there’s nothing like two teenagers to make me question if I really need this kind of drama in my life.

“It’s fine.” Kiara waves me off, wrapping her arms around me. “Happy birthday, Ness!”

“Thanks.”

“Big three-oh.”

“Don’t remind me,” I groan, pulling back.

“Oh please, age is just a number. It’s all about the way you feel.”

“Great, then I’m not only old in age, but I also feel old,” I huff, tucking a strand of my hair that’s stuck to my forehead behind my ear.”

“Bullshit.” Kiara slips her arm through mine and pulls me into the salon. “You don’t look a day over twenty-five, and you know it. C’mon, let’s get you all dolled up.”

“Are you finally going to tell me where we’re going tonight?”

Kiara looks at me, a wicked grin on her mouth. “Where would the fun be in that?”

“You’d make your best friend happy. Isn’t that fun enough?”

“Not in the slightest. I like to watch you squirm.”

“Kiara!” I protest, but she just shakes her head, that smile still on her lips as she turns to the girl standing behind the counter and confirms our reservation.
