“But… how?”

“I stumbled into Kiara one day and asked her if she would give up her night with you, so I could take you out. I know you said you’re not one for parties, but this would be just us. If not, you can call her, and she’ll be here in thirty minutes so you can have your night.”

“I…” I shake my head. “I don’t know what to say.”

Kiara gave up our night, so I could have a date with Quinn? I’m not sure if I’m more surprised by that or by the fact that she managed to keep it a secret.

Quinn extends his arm toward me, and for the first time, I notice a bouquet in his hand. “Say you’ll go out and have dinner with me, Vanessa.”

I sink my teeth into my lower lip to stop it from wobbling.

“I haven’t celebrated my birthday with somebody other than Kiara in… too long.”

Disappointment flashes over Quinn’s face, but he masks it fast. “That’s fine.” He pulls his phone out of his pocket. “We can call her—”

This man. Always so selfless.

I place my hand over his, stopping him from unlocking his phone.

“I’d love to go out to dinner with you, Quinn.”

QUINN

“This was amazing,” Vanessa says as the waiter takes our plates before leaving us alone once again. “I’m so full. I don’t know how I’ll get out of this chair.”

I chuckle, my hand falling over hers on the table. “I’m happy you liked it. And no rush, we have time.”

Although I wanted Vanessa to agree to this date, I knew that chances were slim. I wasn’t joking when I told her I had Kiara on speed dial to call her over if Vanessa said no, but I’m sure as hell glad that wasn’t the case in the end.

“How did you even get a table at Antonio’s on such short notice?”

“It might not have been that short,” I admit, my finger rubbing her knuckles as I give her a sheepish grin.

God, she’s breathtaking. That little black dress clings to her every curve; tiny straps stick to her shoulders, the silky material dipping down into a V that accentuates her cleavage. And don’t even get me started on those red lips. The moment she opened her door, I wanted to push her back into her apartment and have my way with her.

Vanessa’s mouth hangs open. “I can’t believe this!”

“What?” I raise my brows. “That I planned a date for your birthday?”

“That too, but also the fact Kiara managed to keep her mouth shut for so long.” She purses her lips. “She usually tells me everything.”

I lean across the table. “Maybe she likes me more? Ever thought of that?”

“Right.” Vanessa rolls her eyes. “No way, no how.”

“You never know. She does have a cute nickname for me,” I tease.

“I can’t believe you let her call you that. Earlier, when we were getting our nails done, she blurted it out in front of the technicians, and I swear I wanted to sink into a hole. God only knows what those women thought about us.”

“Who cares what they think?”

“Me?” She turns her hand in mine, our fingers interlocking. “We go there once a month, and now they think I’m a cougar or something.”

“Screw what other people think, Ness. They don’t know shit about who you are and how amazing you are.”

Her eyes widen at my words, and I can see her throat bob as she swallows.
