“I—” She starts but then the waiter comes, a plate in hand. Vanessa gives him a passing glance and then does a double-take, her mouth falling open. “Oh my…” Vanessa shakes her head as the waiter places the plate with a small cake in front of her. “What is this?” she asks, looking from me to the cake and back.

“A birthday cake,” I grin. Pulling my hand from hers, I take a deep breath. “Happy birthday to you,” I start to sing very badly, drawing the attention of people sitting around us. “Happy birthday to you, Vanessa.”

I expect her to protest. To look around and tell me to stop, but Vanessa surprises me once again when she starts to laugh in earnest.

“Is my singing so bad?” I ask as I wrap up the song.

“No,” Vanessa says, still laughing.

I give her a pointed look.

“Okay, maybe a tiny bit.” Vanessa’s teeth sink into her lower lip, hands clasped in front of her as she just stares at the cake. It’s a simple chocolate cake with strawberries on top. “Happy birthday, Vanessa” is written in cursive letters.

“C’mon, make a wish.”

Her eyes meet mine for a split second, happiness twinkling in her brown irises before she inhales and blows the candle.

“You didn’t really have to get me a cake.”

“What’s a birthday without a cake?” I take out the candle and set it to the side. “Mind sharing it with me, though?”

“Not at all.” She plucks one of the strawberries from the top and brings it to my mouth. Holding her gaze, I bite into the ripe fruit, the sweetness spreading through my mouth. Before she can grab one for herself, I do it for her.

“It’s really sweet.”

I lean closer, dropping my voice so only she can hear me. “Not as sweet as you’ll taste later on my tongue.”

Vanessa sucks in a breath, a pretty pink color spreading into her cheeks. Her pupils are dilated, mouth slightly parted.

“Oh really?”

My legs brush hers under the table.

“Mhmm…” I tuck one runaway curl behind her ear, my fingers brushing against her neck. She shivers under my touch. “That’s the present I’m looking the most forward to giving you.”

“Quinn…” she whispers, her voice raspy.

“Yeah?”

She gives her head a shake as if she’s trying to clear her mind. “You’re not playing fair. You can’t tease me like that when you can’t deliver on your promises.”

I slip my hand under the table and place it over her knee. She jolts at the touch, her eyes growing wide.

“Can’t I?” I ask, my palm caressing her smooth skin.

She looks around in panic. “Are you nuts?”

“If you want me to deliver, I don’t have a problem in doing so. Any place, any time.”

“You can’t be serious.”

I can’t be serious?I want to laugh at the absurdity of it.

I’d have her any way I can, whenever I can—no questions asked.

Sliding my hand higher is my only answer.

Vanessa glares at me across the table. Or she tries to, at least. She bites the inside of her cheeks as goosebumps appear on her skin, in the wake of my touch. Her chest rises and falls rapidly, as I caress her inner thi—
