Page 70 of Kiss To Tempt

“No shit. I’ll be working at the high school here in Blairwood.”

“Professor McLannister,” Kelly says, her hand touching my chest. “It does have a nice ring to it.”

My muscles stiffen under her touch. Kelly and I had a thing before. We casually dated for a few months my senior year but broke it off this spring. She’s a fun girl, and we had a good time together, but it just made no sense for us to continue hooking up when I was graduating soon.

I clear my throat, “I don’t know about that.”

Kelly laughs, “I bet all the girls will have a crush on you.”

“God, I hope not,” I let out a nervous chuckle. “That would be awkward.”

Besides, I don’t want some girl to have a crush on me. There is only one woman I want, and I have yet to tell her I’m staying. Or, you know, how I feel.

I was planning to tell her once she got here, test the waters, but she was nowhere to be seen. Maybe I should text her again? Or hell, I could just go back home and knock on her door. Yes, I’ll…

“Ness?” Nate’s question snaps me out of my head. I look up to see the back of a familiar curly head.

“Vanessa?”

“Yeah, she was just here, but she…” Nate notices Kelly still standing next to me, the realization dawning on him. “Oh…”

“Shit,” I swear, putting my bottle on the high table. I pull a wad of cash and toss it on the table, not bothering to check if it’ll be enough.

Shit, shit, shit.

“I’ve gotta go.”

“You better, dude. She looked…” Nate shakes his head. “Sad.”

Great. Not pissed, but sad.

I could deal with pissed Vanessa any day of the week, but if she were pissed, she would have faced me. She wouldn’t have run away.

“Quinn, what’s…” Kelly tries to grab my hand, but I pull it out of her reach.

“Sorry, Kelly, but I’m out.”

Sidestepping a few of the guys that are in my way, I quickly make my way out of Moore’s. My eyes narrow as soon as I step outside, the late afternoon sun almost completely lost over the horizon. A group of guys stands by Moore’s, laughing.

I turn around looking for that familiar curly hair I’ve seen before, my heart beating a mile a minute the longer it takes me to find her.

She couldn’t have disappeared so fast. It just makes no sense.

“So where the he—”

That’s when I see her. Vanessa’s running away, her arms wrapped around her middle as she all but sprints in her high heels.

“Shit.” I run after her. “Ness, wait!”

Her body tenses at my words, but she doesn’t look over her shoulder. Hell, she doesn’t even slow down.

“Ness!” I yell, going into a full-out run.

“Go away, Quinn.”

A few more steps. Just a few more…

“Not so fast.” My fingers curl around her wrist, and I pull her toward me. “What the hell, Ness?”
