Page 71 of Kiss To Tempt

We’re both breathing hard from the run. Vanessa shakes her head, trying to get out of my grasp. “Let me go, Quinn.”

She looks everywhere but at me, but not before I can see her shimmering eyes.

Fuck. Nate was right.

“I’m not letting you go anywhere until we talk,” I protest, but loosen my hold on her just a tiny bit. The last thing I want to do is hurt her. “Why did you just leave like that?”

“Quinn,” she hisses through clenched teeth, still struggling to get out of my grasp. “Let. Me. Go.”

I grab her other hand to stop her from moving and give her a little shake. “Or what?”

She tilts her head back, her tear-stained eyes meeting mine. “Or I’ll kick you in the balls.”

I can’t help myself, I chuckle.

“I’m not joking.” Vanessa presses her mouth tightly together, her chin jutting forward.

God, she’s gorgeous.

“Oh, I don’t doubt you for a second, but I don’t think that’s in either of our interests.”

“Oh, it’s in my interest, just fine.” She tries to tug her hands back, but I barely move an inch. “I mean it, Quinn.”

“I mean it too. I’m not letting you go until you talk to me.” I wait for her to say something, but she just stubbornly presses her mouth together and looks away. “Is this about Kelly?”

If possible, her jaw clenches even tighter, and I can feel her body freeze under my touch.

“Because if it is…” I say slowly, watching her every reaction. “This is all just a load of bullshit.”

This gets her attention. Vanessa’s head snaps in my direction, her eyes narrowing at me. “Bullshit? I saw you, Quinn! I saw you flirt with her with my own eyes, so don’t you try to bullshit me.”

So Kellyisthe issue. Finally, some progress.

“I was just talking to her. Reluctantly, if I might add.”

Vanessa glares at me. “You didn’t look reluctant at all from where I was standing.”

“She appeared out of nowhere and wanted to chat. I couldn’t just blow her off, now, could I?”

“But did she have to get all in your face and touch you?” Vanessa yells, cheeks flushing. Her chest is rising and falling fast, her words echoing in the night.

Slowly, I lift my brow at her. “Are you jealous, Ness?”

“Wh—” Her mouth falls open, her cheeks turning dark red. “Of course not! Why would I be jealous?”

“Why would you?” I ask gently, trying to appear nonchalant when I’m anything but. I swear I can feel the echo of my heartbeat ring in my ears.

“W-we…” Her tongue darts out, sliding over her lips, and damn if my gaze doesn’t fall to that stubborn mouth of hers. How bad would it be if I just kissed her until she stopped with this nonsense? “We agreed this is only for the summer. Just a fling.”

“Is that really what you want?” I move closer, my chest brushing against hers. “A fling?”

“That’s what we agreed on. And since the summer is almost ov—”

“But is that what you want?” I stop her before she can finish. This time I say the words slowly, making sure to enunciate every word. “For us to be over?”

“I…”

“Because that with Kelly was just bullshit, and you know it.” Letting go of her wrist, I lift my hand and gently brush a strand of her hair behind her ear. “Nothing happened between us. Well, not since we broke it off last spring. She came and wanted to talk, and my mind was divided between the pool game and your crazy ass ignoring my messages. I was getting ready to wrap the night up, so I could go home. Toyou.”
