CHAPTER 6

HUDSON

I saw her from across the bar the minute her and her friend walked in. I couldn’t take my eyes off of her, which is how I realized that she really wasn’t there for a good time. No, she was there to forget someone or something. It’s the only reason someone drinks that much that fast.

She’s still as beautiful as I remember from last week and now, she’s wearing a tight dress that leaves me wanting to see what’s underneath; to feel her body against mine. Her long, brunette hair falls down her back in waves and makes me want to run my fingers through it. I was fixated on watching her move through my bar.

Then I watched her and her friend attempt to dance. It was quite a spectacle. People had to get out of their way or risk getting clotheslined in their attempt to dance. It was the reason Kane went out there and tried to corral Kate’s friend. I was about to do the same thing to Kate when she returned to the bar.

Right now, she’s passed out in my passenger seat, snoring against the window. She obviously rarely drinks that much.

My GPS tells me I’m close to her house. She lives in an RV park? I follow the road around the neighborhood when GPS tells me I’ve arrived at my destination. She lives in an RV park, but her house is one of those tiny houses. It looks as small as my shed where I keep my lawnmower.

“Kate. Your home.” I gently shake her shoulder. She doesn’t stir. I know she’s still breathing because the passenger side window is all fogged up with her breath.

“Kate, honey. Time to wake up.” I shake her again. Honey? Where the hell did that come from?

Nothing.

I sigh. “Great.” I climb out of the truck, go around to her side and open the door carefully to keep her from falling out and onto the ground. “Kate.”

Nothing. She’s out cold.

I pull her keys out of her purse, unlock her door, and return to the truck. “Kate. Wake up, honey.” There it is again.

Her head bobs forward and lands on my shoulder. Wow, she smells good, except for the alcohol in her breath.

I slide my arm underneath her knees and my other arm behind her back and pick her up. Kicking the truck door closed with my foot, I bring her to the front door.

When I open the door, something white and grey comes flying out at me. “Honk! Honk! Honk!”

What the fuck?! I kick it away from me, and it goes back into the house.

“Honk! Honk! Honk!”

I finally get Kate into the house and see it’s a goose. “Of course you have a pet goose.” I say to Kate, but she’s out cold with her head against my shoulder. She smells like orange blossoms and it’s screwing with my head.

“Honk!”

I turn to the goose. “Shush. She’s passed out. It’s not my fault.”

“Honk!” The goose flaps his feet as he heads to the back of the house. I follow him with Kate still in my arms.

The goose goes to a bed in the corner of the room and lays down as I place Kate on the king size bed. I can’t believe she has a kingsize bed in this shed of hers.

Now what, Hudson. What are you going to do? Leave her here by herself as she sleeps it off or stay until she wakes up and make sure she’s okay? I watch her sleep for a few minutes and make my decision.

I pull her high heels off her feet and drop them on the floor, and she doesn’t even budge. Next, I find the zipper on her dress and unzip it enough so that she can breathe while she sleeps. I’m not sure how she got this thing on herself, it’s so tight, but she looks hot as fuck in it. If she was mine, she’d wear it for me and only me.

If she was yours? Hudson, what the hell?

I swing her feet under the covers of her bed and tuck her in. Watching her sleep, seeing her in this dress, and smelling her orange blossom perfume… I have to step away. She already feels like mine, and I don’t even know her. How is this possible?

“Honk.”

I turn to the goose. “You need to go outside, eat, drink? I know nothing of your kind.”

He looks at me, sighs… yes, sighs… and starts out the door of the bedroom, so I follow him. He stands in the tiny kitchen and looks up at the counter. “Honk.”
