“I said yes.” I interrupt her tirade.

“And?”

“And… it was amazing. Magical.”

“Magical.” Grace repeats softly. “I’m so jealous and so proud of you at the same time.”

“Proud?”

“Yes, proud. It’s been so long since you’ve put yourself out there. I’m proud of you. How do you feel?”

I try to put into words how I’m feeling, but I’m not sure I can. “I don’t know. Like something’s new, but the same. You know?”

She only nods.

“Honk! Honk! Honk!” Wilbur is at the front door.

“I’m coming Wilbur.” I jump up from the couch and open the front door.

“Honk!”

“Hello to you, too. I brought you some treats.” I hold up the bag and he waddles over and nips at my leg.

“So, when are you going to see him again?”

I pour some treats into my hand and Wilbur makes a mess on the floor, trying to get them all in one bite but is unsuccessful. “Saturday night. He’s making me dinner at his place.”

“Oh. A sleepover, perhaps?” Grace teases.

“No. No sleepovers. I’m not there yet. And we’ve only had our first date.”

“Ah. Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t you already have a sleepover? And, technically, you’ve spent time with him twice before today.” Grace stands up with her hands on her hip, “That makes three dates. I’m thinking sleepover.” She singsongs.

“One,” I hold out a finger, “I was drunk and passed out. He stayed because… I don’t know why. Out of duty or something. Two,” I hold up another finger, “he came over and watched me cry all day the second time we were together. Quite frankly, I’m not too sure why he wanted to go on a date with me to begin with after that day.” I wipe my hands on a dishtowel after feeding Wilbur. “And four, even he said today was our first date.”

“You missed three.”

“What?”

“You counted to four and missed the number three. He’s got you all discombobulated.”

“That’s a big word.”

“I’m a big deal.” Grace laughs, and I can only shake my head at her boldness.

“Okay. Three. Not four. Whatever. You get what I’m saying. No sleepover.”

“Fine, but why are you waiting until Saturday?”

“He works shift tomorrow at the fire station.”

“And why aren’t you having dinner tonight?” Grace is impossible.

“We spent practically all day together. Besides, I need time to process all that’s happened. Remember, I thought it was just lunch. Not a lunch date. Besides, he’s working at Hooplas tonight.”

“Okay, I get it.” Graces then squeals. “I’m so excited for you!”

My phone buzzes. “I’m excited, too. I really like him.” I grab my phone and open the incoming text message and smile. I text back.
