“Hudson, you are entirely too excited about this game, you know that, right?”

“Come on. Where’s your spirit?”

“You have enough spirit for the both of us.” I tell him as we approach the team dugout. “I’ll see you later.”

“Go get ‘em, slugger!” He says before kissing me in front of everyone in the bleachers.

“That’s for baseball. We’re playing kickball.” I laugh at him.

“Okay, go get ‘em, kicker!”

“I’m not sure that’s right either, but I’ll take it.” I kiss him once more because I can, and then join Grace and the rest of my team.

“Glad you two could separate from each other long enough to attend,” Grace says under her breath, laughing.

“You’re just jealous.”

“We’re all jealous.” Mia says, fanning herself.

“Ha!” Grace laughs, pointing at me.

We lost.

Again.

The other team actually kicked our ass. They got three runs to our big zero runs.

We suck.

This time it was Brooke and Kendall that almost got runs but ended up getting tagged out by the umpire. I think he felt bad for us and even gave us the benefit of the doubt on a questionable call, but in the end, he had to call Brooke out when she got pinged by the ball in the head. There was no denying that one.

We still had fun and celebrated our ‘almost’ runs. At least we’re up to two ‘almost’ runs. That’s one up from our last game. A positive attitude goes a long way, right?

“I’ll see you this evening at the picnic, Kate.” Molly calls over to Hudson and me as we climb into his truck.

I wave at her. “See you there, Molly!” I close the door. “I can’t wait to take a shower. I’m disgusting.”

“You look good to me, baby.” Hudson wiggles his eyebrows.

Wrinkling my nose, “Ew. Gross.”

He laughs at me. “You guys did pretty good out there today.”

“Ha. Thanks for the pity, but we suck.”

“No, not really. You all made some great moves, but you just need more practice in working as a team. That’ll come the more you play together.”

“I hope so.” I tap my shoes, and a bunch of red clay falls to the floor of the truck. “Oops."

"Don’t worry about it. I’m getting it cleaned while I’m at the station tomorrow.”

“Okay.”

“What time do you want to leave for the picnic?”

“I want to be there as soon as possible, if you don’t mind. I want to help wherever I can. Grace and Riley, and really a lot of other people, have jumped in to make this possible. Being there and helping is the least I can do, right? I mean, I’ve been trying to help all week, but no one will let me.”

Hudson pulls into his driveway, “I get it. I’ve been trying to help, too, but everyone keeps telling me to just take care of you. Like I need anyone to tell me to do that.” He leans over to kiss me. “I will always take care of you, baby.”
